So it's just me and my 10 yr old son tonight, any ideas for a reasonable place in the city or North for two avowed carnivores? He loves ribs and shrimp, I'm not picky:)

"Reasonable" and "carnivores" says "El Llano" to me, or some other South American steak place where you get big meats on a Flintstonian wooden plank with basic starches on the side. Actually, even though I had a mostly bad reaction to it, you might even enjoy the tropical delirium atmosphere of El Pueblito Viejo. Never thought I'd recommend it, but it is half really cool even if I also found it half unbearable, it might suit someone else just fine.

Also pretty reasonable would be Shiraz, where you can get skewers and such while sitting amid a cartoon version of the middle east.

I'd call Shiraz first. There was a For Lease sign up when I passed this afternoon.

Oops. That's too bad.

Mike,

There's this place in Evanston - pretty good food ... it's called Celtic Knot ... ever heard of it?

Another good option would be Irazu, if your son likes shakes too.

Irazu
1865 N. Milwaukee Ave.

Best,
Michael

Sparky had a blast at the Korean Garden Buffet - plenty of meat and seafood, plus you can cook it yourself in the in-table charcoal grill (if you beat the friendly waitress to it), and a live turtle tank in case pyrotechnics aren't enough.

5347 N. Lincoln Ave.

In case someone pulls up this post when doing a search - please note that as of today, Shiraz is NOT closed. It never has been. The sign was likely for the place next door.

But the Korean Garden Buffet is closed :( That place was great!

I hit the Lincoln Ave El Llano two weeks ago for my red meat craving and they did not dissapoint.

Another surprising steak find was the steak and crab legs combo at El Barco. I went there with my friend Tasha on Saturday and she ordered it. The steakk was huge, easily 14" long and cooked perfectly bloody rare as requested. Crab legs were delicious, shrimp and octopus ceviche were fresh and bright tasting. The winner for me was their smoky black oily salsa, I could eat that stuff just by itself!
