We have visitors coming in a few weeks, and one of them has asked if there are any Portugese restaurants we might try? I'm stumped! Are there any out there? Her grandparents were Portugese, and she's looking for some home cooking. Thanks for any help....

Not any more. But I venture to say they'd have plenty of takers, if there were.

Avec, during off-hours, is about as close as you can get. Tables and some dishes are reminiscent (to me, at least) of Obidos or Sintra. Regardless of exact affiliation (it's really pan-Iberian-Gallic-Ligurian), the food as phenomenal.

There are select colonial Portuguese-influenced dishes at the churrascarias and some of the Indian (Goa) and Hawaiian places - Sola boasts Portuguese donuts and at least one fish preparation. But if they're looking for something to remind them of home, go Avec.

Wow - Avec sounds marvelous! I think we were kind of looking for hole-in-the-wall eats, but I could be happy at Avec.

Any portuguese in a storm, eh? (sorry, I couldn't stop my fingers)

Avec also has some nice Portugese wines on their list.

Every once in a while there are threads about what cuisine is missing in Chicago (they usually draw more than their fair share of people complaining that people do not make {fill in food} they way they do in {fill in town} who have been here for 15 minutes and sampled {food} at two places within 3 minutes of their house or work  but I digress).

Portugese is my standard reply. A little Vinho Verde, a little marinated squid, etc. Especially in the summer. Makes me want to head to Newark, or any number of other northeastern towns with decent-sized Portugese and Brazilian populations. Alas, not here.
