I worked in a small sandwich shop, the Beach Nut in Hampton Beach, one summer during college.
We made fantastic steak and cheese sandwiches, and ever since I've been trying to find something similar.

    Finally found it in Capriotti's.
Beef and onion chopped up and fried on a hot plate, melted cheese, and a soft roll.

If anyone knows of a steak + cheese like this in Chicago - believe me, I'm all ears! :D

Capriotti's Sandwich Shop... two will be or could be open now in Wisconsin. One in Madison, the other in the Milwaukee area.

Homemade turkey... each night whole turkeys are baked for use in turkey sammies, the nest day. And yes the sammie with the dressing is the bomb.

And yes my cousin does work for Capriotti's Sandwich Shop.

Do you have an address for Eastern Style Grinders? Google comes up with Eastern Style Pizza in Rogers Park, not sure if that's the same thing.

You all are just haters. Every time I go to Vegas I make sure I go to Capriotti's. The sandwiches are sooo good! They always taste fresh and the meat doesn't taste like something you would get from a deli or all those other sandwich shops out there. Who actually doesn't think the Capastrami sandwich is delicious? I'm craving one right now as we speak! If you haven't tried a sandwich from Capriotti's, go get one!

Well, we made the drive to Milwaukee yesterday.

    WELL WORTH IT!!!

The sandwiches were every bit as good as we remember.
We made a stop at the Potawatomi Casino which was a delight.
If you like casinos and are unimpressed with what is available in Indiana and Illinois, you MUST drive up and check this place out. It is beautiful, spacious, clean and the closest thing we have seen to a Las Vegas casino in these parts.

We went up about 9:00 a.m. and the traffic was fantastic (1hour, 10 min.) We played a few hours of poker, went to get some Capriotti's to go and we were home by 4:00.
    What a delightful day!

The sandwiches were amazing, the gambling quite enjoyable
and who knew such delights were within a short driving distance.

    Highly recommended!

    info:
Capriotti's Sandwich Shop opened Monday morning on the lobby floor of the Chase tower downtown, and the latest Sonic Drive-in is open in Greenfield.

Capriotti's, a counter-service restaurant, serves subs and sandwiches, and its specialties include sandwiches made from turkeys and beef roasted overnight and hand-pulled.

Sandwiches come in three sizes, with 9-inch sandwiches starting at $6.75. A 12-inch sandwich is around $8.25, and a 20-inch around $12.50. Sandwiches come on a sub roll, but white or wheat bread is available. Vegetarian options include soy-based "turkey."

The Capriotti's sandwich that has won kudos is the one that Steve Chanos -- co-franchisee with brother Tom -- calls Thanksgiving on a roll: The Bobbie, with turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing and mayonnaise.

The store's address is 111 E. Wisconsin Ave., Suite 130, off the Chase lobby, but it also has an outside entrance on Water St. just north of Michigan St. The phone number is (414) 223-2277. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Ill be checking them out next time I'm in Milwaukee. A Bobbie and a cheesesteak are the must gets? and for the record, I dont know if you've been but Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo, MI is 72 miles from Chicago while Milwaukee is 92. I would give the edge on other stuff to do (outside the casino) besides gamble to Milwaukee but Four Winds is a much better gaming palace than Potawatomi and as close to Vegas as you can get in these parts, including the Midwests only WPT poker room...But Potawatomi is much better than anything in IL or IN. Thanks for the heads up.

    Oh Snap!

I drove thru Milwaukee yesterday on da way up to da U.P. here hey?
I pulled up this old thread right before we left, but as it worked out, time was at a premium. I'm planning on stopping on the way back. I'm really hoping it won't be a letdown. They claim to roast turkeys in house on the menu.
If they use actual turkey (which for some reason, is like a miracle nowadays in the realm of chain sammich joints) and real mayonnaise instead of cheap, sugary garbage, they are at about 75% of my ideal for a sammich. Think I'm gonna ask for a roast beef and turkey with all the trimmings. If the meat is fake and the mayo is fake also, there's gonna be hell to pay.
We cannot be friends if you do not know the difference between Mayo and Miracle Whip.

Botd and I are practically lifelong fans of Capriotti's. When we moved from Las Vegas to Madison we were so sad ... when they opened shops in Madison we were ecstatic! And then we moved to Chicago and were deprived for a couple more years. Two weeks ago, I kid you not, we went to Milwaukee for one day and ate two glorious meals at the Capriotti's there.

A couple of days ago I was doing my usual once-a-month check for news on the proposed Capriotti's branch here ... and saw that they finally had a location and opening date. I think I cried a little.

So I went by Capriottis last Friday. My family is from Delaware, so I grew up on twice yearly pilgrimages to the original shop. I'm soooo excited to have one in Chicago now. The flavor definitely reminded me of the Delaware subs - I was pretty happy overall. The bread is fluffier than the East Coast versions, but the meats and cheeses (I had the Italian) and especially the hot peppers were just like I remember.

This week is a soft opening, but they are having their grand opening next Friday the 28th. The first 100 people in line at 10am will get one free Bobby sub each week for a year. Not sure if many people in Chicago know about Capriottis but I figured if anyone would be interested, it would be LTHers :-).

"Soft" opening is right! Just got back from this place. I got the Italian Sub. It was on the softest, spongiest, whitest, taste- and crust-free sub roll ever! Also kind of overloaded with mayo. Basic deli meats and cheese. Big disappointment.

It's real close to my office and Ill give it another try. The house roasted turkey sandwiches sound cool, one featuring dressing and cranberry sauce. Ill ditch the soft white roll for whole wheat sliced bread next time...

Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop, the Las Vegas-based chain that opened its first Chicago location in October has big plans for this market. The company intends on opening a second shop in December at 170 Aberdeen St. in Fulton Market, according to a spokeswoman.

    Hi,

A few weeks ago, I saw Capriotti's in Overland Park, Kansas. I was interested, but the siren song of LC's BBQ won.

Maybe next time, I will pick up an early lunch.

I have been to two Capriotti's - one in Las Vegas next to Shaq's chicken place and the other in Laughlin. I thought in both cases the food was very good. I always get the turkey and ham sandwich with cranberry sauce. The product has been fresh.

I would not eat there in Kansas City either.
