Just drove by and saw this sign in the former "Don't Worry" location on Central. Looks like a promising addition to the neighborhood, slated to open Summer 2010.

The closed forever ice cream shop in Roscoe Village looked like it was open today as I drove past. Looks like it's gelato and hamburgers by the neons they have in the window. Didn't catch the new name as I went by.

I was chatting with a friend this past weekend who hails from near Sichuan Province. He tells me that Phoenix Inn has a new Sichuan chef and the specialties are "80% authentic" and much better than pre-fire fare. I haven't been, though I intend to stop by sometime this week.

It was kind of odd--we were walking by, saw the door was open and stopped in.
There was nobody in the place!
Knowing the proprietor we called his name several times and got no response. I poked my head into the kitchen and confirmed that there was actually nobody there. The back door was open, a nice grill seemed to be fired up, the fryer was empty of fat, but overall things were pretty ship-shape. On our way out I took notice of the laptop up and running behind the counter.
I was tempted because, once again, there was nobody there, but I really don't do stuff like that anyway.

So I'm assuming it was a dry run to see if the equipment was in good shape.
But, really, if you're going to step outside for a smoke, close your doors.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for this place.

    Actually, it's 1512 Sherman....
15121 would probably be north of the Cheddar Curtain. :D

The Sugar Syndicate, part of Sweet Collective, is closing for good as of tomorrow. From an email notification:

The Sugar Syndicate will be closed as of Saturday, May 22, 2010. After 4 successful years, the time has come to take advantage of other opportunities.

Thank you to all of my clients for letting The Sugar Syndicate be a part of your celebrations and trusting me to create your wonderful cakes and pastries. My success would not have been possible without your generous and numerous positive online reviews and word of mouth.

Thank you to my vendors, industry collaborators and a special thank you to my Sweet Collective partners for all your support. Sweet Collective will continue with Rich Chocolates & Candies and Ruth and Phil's Gourmet Ice Cream.

For any cake and pastry orders, I am happy to refer you to Keli at Vanille Patisserie at 773-868-4574 or Angel Food Bakery at 773-728-1512.

From the same email it was announced that Sweet Collective is closing it's store for the summer while they sell at Farmers' Markets, but Ruth & Phil's and Rich's Chocolate and Candy will return in the fall.

We're so appreciative that all of you keep making the trip up to see us (and get your sweet fixes), so this summer, we're coming to YOU (sort of).

Rich Chocolates & Candies and Ruth and Phil's Gourmet Ice Cream will be at the following farmer's markets this summer:

    Prudential Plaza- Tuesdays 7am - 3pm
Lincoln Square AFTERNOON MARKET- Thursdays 4pm- 8pm
Forest Park- every other Friday from 3pm- 7pm
Independence Park - every other Sunday from 9am-1pm

Because of this, our retail store will be CLOSED FOR THE SUMMER as of Saturday May 29. Our last day will be Friday the 28th from 11-6. Of course, we are always available by appointment, and should you need to place an order, we can arrange a pick up time at the shop.

We hope this helps make your summer sweeter and more convenient! Feel free to contact us with any questions.

Marche is closing on June 13, according to the chicagoist. Too bad-- probably the most consistent of kleiner's restaurants. Funny, bc I was just thinking of it tonight after yet another subpar meal at Gioco (only went bc I had a groupon).

ChgoMike: About Phoenix Inn in Evanston having a new chef from Sichuan since they re-opened.
Drooling about your comment since I love good Hunan and Sichuan cuisines, I went there for lunch a few days ago.
Unfortunately my $5.35 lunch special of Chicken in garlic sauce, that was supposed to be spicy, was nothing more than the traditional Cantonese-American version in a bad-old brown sauce with no trace of any kind of spice but too much celery and water chestnuts.
The special included an egg-roll that was as mediocre as can be, a bland fried rice, and a barely better hot and sour soup.
Perhaps I should try one of the regular dishes offered for dinner.... But I have serious doubts.

Don't know if anyone has any info on EightySix Brewpub. Looks to be a Gastropub at the intersection of Milwaukee and Armitage. It seems to be in the very early stages (still looking for investors), but they have an address, General Manager, and Exectuive Chef lined up.

Went to get bread at the D'Amatos bakery on my block today, and shocked to find it closed up. This is the one further West, 1332 Grand than the previously mentioned one that was moved temporarily across the street. Rumors of fighting among the family, so who knows what will happen next, but sure will miss my close to home fresh bread.

So the Phoenix rises again after a fire. What next? Will we hear that down in Greektown, the Sisyphus grill just keeps rolling out the dolma, day after day? That nobody has figured out what's in the mystery meat at the Sphinx? I love it. I'm sorry the owners had to suffer that, but if anyplace could survive a fire ...
