Anything down there? I have to make a trip tomorrow and I'm wondering if it's worth searching out food vs. swinging around and grabbing Old Fashioned Donuts and/or Barbara Ann's on the way back.

Do a search for "Frankfort" in Eating Out in Chicagoland. Several threads will come up.

Thanks for the heads up, but most of those threads mention places near or around Frankfort, and alas nothing it really seems worth going out of your way for. Oh well.

Don't forget the thread The Suburbs are not a culinary wasteland's South Suburbs post, which contains about a half-dozen mentions of Frankfort. Though worth noting, the Frankfort pub Galway Tribes closed down some time ago and then later reopened in Mokena as simply "Tribes"

When I was younger I had family connections (aunt worked there, cousin worked there, no ties to ownership) to the restaurant Enrico's in Frankfort and I remember liking the pizza there pretty well back then. I can't really vouch for it now though as I haven't eaten there in years, maybe decades.

but seriously, is Frankfort considered "beyond Chicagoland?" weird

Great sammys, pasta and sides. Carry out deli style. Might be some tables on the sidewalk out front when weather is nice.

Hot grill is a sweet little find! A hugh omelette with Gyro meat, hash browns and greek toast is one of my favorites from this joint. They have GREAT home cooking and handmade burgers and I think Steven the owner/cook is Greek and you can taste it in the Greek chicken and the Shishkabob. Never had anything bad from Hot Grill.
Always check walls or ask for daily specials.

Moderators, please move this thread back to where it belongs. We the people of Frankfort have not seceded from the Chicago area.

As for places to eat in Frankfort, the area blends together with Mokena and Tinley Park, so I don't see what the big deal is about suggestions in those towns. In Frankfort proper there is the aforementioned Bier Stube.

Parmesans for brick oven pizza and Italian is rather good. Dan McGee's has gotten a nice following and some love from critics. Courtyard Bistro is another good choice in Frankfort.

If there is a specific type of thing you are looking for, mention it. I can concede that diversity is not the greatest strength in this area, but there are plenty of good options.

Nope, you're officially in The Boonies aka Downstate to us.

My old roommate lives in Frankfort and I've played a couple of gigs with my band 'out' there. :)

Trip to Frankfort went well, but I opted for my original plan of hitting Old Fashioned Donuts and Barbara Ann's on the way back. As for whether or not Frankfort counts as Chicagoland, there has to be a cut-off at some point, right? But I suppose it does just squeak in to the general borders of that nebulous, all-encompassing urban blob. Not that I didn't have to look it up on a map to see where it was.

If you can get there (well Mokena anyway) on Metra- it is not beyond Chicagoland.

I had a good waffle-cone at Kernel Sweet Tooth II on Saturday. I wouldn't go a long ways out of my way for it, but after a 45 mile bike ride it was excellent.

HI,

A friend who does not participate on this board, who follows the German food scene (or is it just keeping score on what remains). She believes this is the best German food in the Chicago area. Do we have any affirmations here? (I like the German food I make, not always what I get in restaurants.)

I will be in this area on Saturday, so I am easily persuaded to go elsewhere.

Thanks!

Regards,

Cathy, Here is a recent review from a blog I follow. The people I know that have recommended it have all been of German descent.
Get a taste of Germany at Chef Klaus' Bier Stube

Cathy, I was there about a year ago for dinner with my husband. We didn't have the kids with us and stopped on impulse since it had been many years since we dined at the Bier Stube. We were seated in one of the little intimate booths along the wall -- I didn't like it because I felt like I was sitting inside a box, but we were there for the food, and I didn't want to wait for another table. There was a huge party going on right in front of our booth -- it was clearly a large German family, they were already rather buzzed on beer by the time we got there, and were hanging on each other, serenading the other diners.

As usual, I ordered the schnitzel. They have several different schnitzels on their menu, and I have yet to find one I don't like. My husband had sauerbraten, not my favorite, but he managed to plow through most of it. We both brought food home because the portions very hearty.

I hope you go, and enjoy your dinner!

Suzy

Cathy2,

Chef Klaus is good, though I think it has lost half a step after moving to its current location after the original burnt down. I haven't been to enough German restaurants to proclaim it the best, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

What brings you down my way? If you want, I have some time on Saturday, I can put together a little Frankfort area tasting tour for you.

Glenn
