I just heard this morning that a new spot opened up on Gary Ave (south of the intersection with Army Trail) with a sign proclaiming "Egyptian Fast Food". Can't find a shred of evidence online, so was hoping that someone from the area could confirm/deny this...

It sounds TINY, and may have even taken over one of those drive-through only coffee stands.

Hope it's legit, I'd be psyched to be able to get a koshari fix out in the burbs!

Thanks for any info,
G

I can affirm that, yes, I did see it on Gary Ave. between Army Trail Road and North Ave....closer to Army Trail Road on Gary...It definitely looked unique, but the Egyptians may or may not own it...it would be fun if they had the real Egyptian food that people don't have out here...

I hope/expect to be in that very area on Monday; will try to report back on the food itself.

After months of seeing a "coming soon" sign and newspaper covering windows, the sign and the old newspaper are finally down so it might open soon. They are in location that Jake's Burgers used to be, but that place closed down years ago. They actually might get some business since the unoccupied ValueCity department store across the street has been renovated into a Savers thrift store, a kitchen cabinet store along with some other places that will go up shortly. It will be interesting to see if they make it since Eyptian food is not something a lot of people are familiar with. It seems like this place has been renovating for almost a year now.

After months of seeing the "Coming Soon" sign, this place finally opened last Monday. I went there on Tuesday and got the beef sharma. For $7.29, it came with a pita, rice and an Egyptian salad. The portion size was good as I got at least six ounces of beef. The beef had a good flavor and had the typical sharma chew to it. They had a typical Middle Eastern menu and I would go again.

Thanks for the update, I had all but given up on this place ever actually opening.

So, besides shawarma and kebabs, did they have anything like koshari (which is what I would immediately think of upon hearing "Egyptian fast food")?

I've never been there. Just did a little Googling to post the details of the spot as a reference point.

I happened to be in the area, planned to go to the Himalayan Restaurant around the corner but when I spotted this place...

http://wow-restaurant.com/

The menu is solidly Middle Eastern and when asked where the Egyptian influence come in it was mentioned the spicing profile is different, if you have discerning taste buds it will be apparent. Also the Falafel is made with Lima Beans instead of Chickpea.

The food is well prepared. Tender, flavorful and juicy. I had the Beef Shawarma plate and My Bride the Chicken Shawarma sandwich and both were good with a lot of food. The Lentil soup was very good as well.

They have two spits going and finish on the flattop.

I would stop again if in the area.

... and yes, the owners are Egyptian. :)
... and no, I did not see koshari on the menu (see website).
