Seriously, from the sounds of this post, that sounds more like an allergy to shellfish than an amino-acid.

My two experiences at Dong Ky weren't all that positive (muted flavors, mushy noodles) but I never felt it was notable enough to be worth posting about. Can't say the same for Nha Hang Vietnam, which, so far, has never failed to deliver a great meal. And I've not yet tried the Mi Quang but will hopefully correct that soon!

    Hi,

I have seen this same bag of MSG, which I thought they could be more discrete about. Not because I am anti-MSG, though it sends others running to the hills. Or worse, reports on Yelp and here.

I happen not to buy into the MSG fears. If they were really true, why doesn't this extend to sushi with all the msg-rich seaweed wrapped rolls and such. Nobody complains of MSG leaving a Japanese restaurant, though not so when it is Chinese.

The chew to the noodles in the Mi Quang at Nha Hang is exactly what takes it a step above the other.

I love dong ky for certain things, but their soups are certainly close to the worst in the area. Dong Ky's soup, as described during our pho crawl in 2011, has a "thin lifeless salty broth, what you'd imagine a pack of instant pho to taste like." This is how all of the broths in all of the soups I have tasted at Dong Ky. CERTAINLY chock full of MSG and little else. If Nha Hang amps up their soup with MSG, at least they start with a good gelatin and flavor rich base stock.

    MSG allergies don't exist.

Yeah, it's completely shocking that a restaurant uses MSG, isn't it?. It's a real 'man bites dog' story.

I dropped a shitload of amino acid in college. Maybe that's why I have flashbacks whenever I eat the MSG at Nha Hang.

Yeah, I see MSG as no more "cheating" in flavoring food than using salt is. It's an ingredient (straight generic MSG, as opposed to MSG in stuff like Sazon or bouillon cubes or glutamating via fish sauce, soy sauce, etc.) I use in about 10% of my cooking. You do have to be careful with it, though. It's easy to overdo the umami.

Wow, I hadn't heard of any MSG scaremongering in at least thirty years! Unlike, say, gluten scaremongering, or corn syrup scaremongering, or GMO scaremongering, or non-organic scaremongering... Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. :)

I just wanted to bump this post because Nha Hang is still kicking out amazing Vietnamese food. This place was so good when we first tried it in early 2014 that it inspired us to go to Vietnam in early 2015. It was an amazing experience and we ate a lot of incredibly delicious food. It also made us appreciate Nha Hang even more. Nha Hang has an overwhelmingly large menu where nearly everything is at least pretty good and certain dishes are only a hair's breadth away from places in Vietnam that specialize in only a handful of things. It is a truly remarkable little place.

It sounds like others know this. If you are working your way through this menu like us, please post! Here are some unmentioned favorites:

chao vit - This is probably the best congee I have eaten out anywhere. Made with stock, not just water, and it is very aromatic with ginger and seasoned with fish sauce. The plentiful duck pieces are just the fried shallots on the goi.

canh chua ca - Such a delicious sour soup balanced with some nice fruity flavors from the pineapple. Love the produce in the bowl and wish it had even more tomatoes and pineapple.

bun mang vit - Here is the broth is flavored with dried bamboo shoots. I quite liked it, but it is a bit more subtle than the other intense soups available.

banh mi bo kho - I know I have mentioned this before, but it bears reiterating that this is some extremely flavorful beef stew and for whatever reason always seems to have the best fatty tender beef cuts.

suon non muoi sa ot - This is mistranslated. This is not simmered, but grilled or pan seared pork ribs in an delicious rub of chilies and lemongrass and of course fish sauce. Really good, if a bit skimpy on the meat for the price.

I regret that we haven't really tried any of the stir fries. Any recommendations on a xao xa ot preparation or a noodle stir fry?

I've tried the chao vit and really loved it. It's very comforting and the use of stock makes it so savory.

On my last visit, I ordered the Mi Quang and was surprised and saddened to see that the yellow noodles I'm used to receiving were replaced with a completely different type of noodle. These were white and thin and were exactly the same type I received in my bowl of Mi Quang from Dong Ky. I really enjoy the chewy texture of the yellow noodles. I haven't been back yet so I'm not sure if this change is permanent.

Yes indeed! Tipped to the Chao by PIGMON (he also mentions it above), it has become one of my craveworthy dishes.

I've taken your call to action seriously, and I'm going to head there for lunch, I'll be there around 12:30. If anyone is hungry, see you there!

Amazing lunch as always, this place never ceases to impress. I didn't order it, but spied the mi quang at another table and it did appear have the same yellow noodles I've always seen at nha hang

However, I wanted to let everyone know that it will be closed for the month of August.

I am no Mi Quang expert, but this bowl I had at Nha Hang (I will always fondly call it that) is one of the few perfectly seasoned items I've had lately. I tried to imagine which of the full array of condiments provided would make it better in any dimension, and it needed nothing. Additional data point for above discussion: the noodles were yellow and al dente.

We had a great take out meal from Nha Hang Viet Nam tonight. We did take out from them over the summer (and maybe early fall) but they were closed the last few time we tried them. Happily, they were open tonight--we had a big sampling of dishes. Highlights were the rare beef salad, banh xeo (suffered a tiny bit in styrofoam carryout container but still delicious), bun ca ri ga. My daughter loved her rice paper rolls with beef/shrimp and woven noodle cakes. There was one table filled for in-house dining. Their menu is now available online in it's complete/non-Allmenus form

It was good to see you there at lunch time Thursday. Same comment as yours : I have been a fan of this place since they opened almost a decade ago. And they still can count me as a fan Today. The food and welcome from the owners are as good and comforting as they were on their first day. Alain

Another superb meal overseen by our brother Stevez. How many meals did I have here w/him, and seeing his pix makes it even more poignant. Rare beef salad, catfish w/pork belly casserole, banh xeo, and the showstopper, shrimp w/tamarind (which used to be crab that he'd wait for you to order and run across the st to buy). Damn delicious.
