The building that once held Rio de Churrascaria in Glenview has had some action going on it it for a couple of weeks and today there was a sign up in front reading "Palace Banquets".

ETA: er, sorry, technically, it's Northbrook.

Not an opening, exactly, but Ethiopian Diamond in Edgewater is expanding into the place next door, a move, they say, that will make them the largest Ethiopian restaurant in the U.S. The additional space will be used for parties and busy nights, plus a retail space stocking spices and other goods from Ethiopia. The addition is expected to be completed sometime this summer.

Funny, I was just across the street this morning and contemplated checking them out.

Two notes from Tri-Taylor:

The space that was formerly Chickie's now has a sign reading "Soul Food To Go, Coming Soon"

Tacos de Luna, next door to Chickies/Soul Food to Go, has closed.

(However, the excellent Ta Koz, a half block further east, is open and doing well.)

Soul Food To Go
2253 West Taylor Street

Tacos de Luna
2255 West Taylor Street

Ta Koz (or Takoz)
2229 West Taylor Street

In Lincolnshire (next to Champps) I saw a sign that Liquid Fusion is opening up there. The original location is in Northbrook.

Awesome, I love that place. Glad one's opening even closer to home.

I guess that explains why their website isn't working anymore, a fact I noticed at 5:10 this afternoon...

This place is evil. Their smoker is parked right near the Touhy/Caldwell intersection and was going yesterday afternoon and this morning, so if you're driving by with your windows open, you get a strong waft of pork.

The sign still says HIRING but there were people on the patio yesterday and the lot was full; could this be a trial run? I can't wait until they open. We should arrange a thing.

Senza, an all-gluten-free restaurant, is going in at 2873 N. Broadway. Dish said back in early May that they were aiming for a mid-July opening.

With the forest preserve nearby I bet they do a decent carryout business for picnics.

Went by last week and saw that they listed 6/1 as opening day. I had a bad day at work so I stopped by, figured I would sit at the bar, have a drink and check it out. It was crowded at the bar, the rest was not too full. Smelled real good, but I opted for the gyro appetizer which was very good. As far as the place goes.... It kinda reminds me of Kitchen disasters or whatever that show is called. Its the same place as before, a few things inside changed to make it look less Greek and more a smoke house type place. But all very cosmetic. The menu looked good, but then the chef came out and was complaining to a friend sitting at the bar the usual TV reality show drama about slow service and food being sent back that was cold. I reallly really really hope this place turns out to be good, Its close to me and I love BBQ. But I might wait a WHILE BEFORE i GO AGAIN.

Spunky Dunkers new location in the old Brown's Chicken on the southeast corner of Arlington Heights Road and Dundee Road has opened. Nice to have a great donut place in the area.

Lake Geneva Pie Company has opened a Lake Forest location. They don't have all of the pies but you can place an order a few days ahead of time. The Lake Forest location has some frozen items and some of the cream pies etc. in the refrigerator.
I really like their quiches, pies and the chicken pot pie!

Yes, they operated the Braxton Seafood Grill location in the mall for 27 years (as noted here, then when they lost their lease and had to move, they decided to relabel it with their Devon Seafood Grill brand. BTW their website says they begin regular hours July 2; maybe they moved the opening up a week?

I was told that St Roger Abbey French Gourmet Patisserie is moving their location from Algonquin to Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills. A flyer said that their grand opening at the mall is 6/9.

In a bit of "everything old is new again" news, a Belden Deli has re-opened in the location of the original at Clark & Belden, in the lower level of the building that replaced the original deli. I believe that Belden Deli was also briefly in this new building...

Image

I'll be honest that I don't remember the quality of the food at the old iteration at all. I was a kid at the time, but do remember eating at the old location a few times when we were in the city to visit aunts & uncles who lived in Lincoln Park at the time. I've been saying for years that I wish we had options for Jewish-style delis in the area other than the Bagel, so hopefully this one will be good.

My wife and I did pop in to just to check it out (we didn't eat there), and it looks like the real deal, with smoked fish and deli meats in the cases, bins of bagels (did not find out if they make them in house or bring in from elsewhere). Had a selection of coffee cakes, etc. some of which were from North Shore bakery.

EDIT: I guess this one is run by a LEYE & Max's (Highland Park) veteran, and not connected with the one in the Mallers Building -- in fact they're in a legal dispute over the name.
