New England Seafood Company closed on Sunday. Can't say I'm surprised, or, at this point, disappointed, since they had fallen so far from the first few years.

Per their FB page: "After 6 wonderful years, we’ve decided to close our doors to the restaurant. We want to thank our loyal customers and this amazing community.
Our focus has been re-directed to our events and catering opportunities. We can be reached at fishmarket@neseafoodcompany.com."

A high(ish)-end pizza/Italian place called Hearth & Crust quietly opened up about six weeks ago at 3608 W. Irving Park, across the street from McDonald's. If you hadn't noticed, it's because they didn't have any signage until last week; and the signage they did put up is hard to see since it's black against a dark red brick background.

The menu is small: five appetizers, seven non-pizza entrees, and six pizza options with pre-determined ingredient combos and no indication that you can select your own ingredients, though if push comes to shove I'm sure they'll work with you. At any rate it's getting very high praise on Yelp and Facebook and it looks to be worth checking out.

Looks like Abbey Pub's hopes of re-opening post-fire are officially dead with a "For Lease" sign having recently gone up on the building. I hope the new tenant can put the stage side to good use and bring some decent acts into the neighborhood.

For people craving Tex-Mex, Chuy's has opened their outpost in Warrenville. I have not been yet but I know folks who have, folks who know their Tex-Mex, and they were pleasantly surprised at the results. It looks like they've got a special green chile menu right now.

Oh boy oh boy I hope this comes to fruition. Just west of Wentworth on 33rd, they're gutting the ground floor of an apartment building. Today, walking past, I noticed a sign: Redline33, with a coffee cup!! Trolling their website. I hope they offer basic lunch options. Crossing my fingers.

The signage for Braciole Station has been there for months with no visible progress or a building permit. Web site is uninformative: "Hold on - were working as fast as we can with 2 broken hands!" in a small light font at the bottom of the sole page.

Visible signage has been posted for Cubano, in the former Piggyback BBQ spot on N Wells St.

Job postings are on Craigslist too.

I wonder how it can compete with the juggernaut of Cafecito, but at least it isn't another Mediterranean/Middle Eastern spot on Wells.

Mesaku Sushi opened one door west of Franco the Barber which is one door west of New York Bagel and Bialy and across the street from Psistaria. A seemingly odd location for a sushi joint. I wish them well.

I peeked inside before my haircut* and it was clean, neat, tidy, spartan and appeared to be reasonably priced.

I will try soon and report back.

It has since closed, which is puzzling considering the 245 reviews and 4.5-star rating on Yelp would indicate it was well-liked and well-trafficked.

Not long ago there was a banner hanging in the window that read "Coming Soon: The Cabin [the tavern next door] presents The Kid Picnic Basket, an old-fashioned sandwich shop." The banner has since been taken down but a call to The Cabin confirms that a sandwich shop is still in the works.

Posted in a local FB group yesterday:

    Dear Neighbors,
We are so thrilled to announce the September 8,9,10 Grand Opening of The Picnic Basket, an old-fashioned Sandwich and Pastry Shop at 4102 N. Pulaski, Chicago.
Our sandwiches, prepared to your specifications, feature Manny’s pastrami and Corned Beef, Oven roasted free range turkey breast, ham and roast beef with the cheeses and condiments of your choice plus a Manny’s pickle.
If you wish, add potato salad, cole slaw, fruit cups or chips.
Also available: Artisan cheese plates which include candied walnuts, honey pot, red and green grapes and cracker.
    And delicious Eastside Café Pizza.
For dessert enjoy an array of cookies from Eli’s bakery (exclusive to us) or a slice of famous Eli’s cheesecake.
Eat In – Take Out – Party Trays Available.
Opening weekend we will be giving gifts to our first 300 customers - plus there will be opportunities to win an Eli’s Cheesecake – one given away each evening of our 3 Day Opening.
