I have had a hankering for a good ol' layer cake. I've even thought about baking it myself! (gasp!) But I really shouldn't have an entire cake sitting around. Where do you recommend for a good sit and a slice?

I'm confident that there are fancier, maybe better answers, but I've really enjoyed the layered carrot cake at Kaufman's Bakery & Deli. They don't always have carrot cake, but every time I go there some variety of layer cake is on the counter and a slice available for purchase.

Really, all of their baked goods are solid [even if I agree that NY Bagel & Bialy has better bagels, theirs are very good].

No worries about fancy, good old-fashioned diners are fine and dandy. I didn't remember that, I thought they had cupcakes, not big layer cakes. Nice!

I enjoy the cakes at a Taste of Heaven Bakery and Cafe on 5401 N. Clark Street in Chicago. In particular, the chocolate whipped cream cake and chocolate hazelnut cake.

Sweet Mandy B's usually has a nice selection of the classic layer cakes. They sell by the slice and they are yummy!

Cafe Selmarie in Lincoln Square has a variety of good layer cakes. And we have been known to make a special trip to the bakery section of Mariano's just for dessert cake.

If my memory is correct some of the Pete's Fresh Markets sell cakes by Angelica. There is a mean caramel. Grab a slice and go sit in the cafe.

Knowing you, I would bake it Sunday night and take the whole thing to work. Cut what you want from the whole cake and take that home, eat, and leave the rest for your colleagues/staff.

I haven't had a slice there, but the full cakes I've had from Dinkel's have been great.

I want to vouch for a new bakery, Jennivee's Bakery, which has a variety of classic and more creative layer cakes, including ube, mango, and Ferrero Rocher. Cute little place with very gracious service.

Did somebody see Tina Fey on SNL this other night?

I found a recipe on Pinterest a while back for a greek yogurt lemon raspberry cake with cream cheese frosting that is delicious. I made it for Father's Day and my sister requested it for her birthday which we're celebrating tomorrow.

I'VE been in the mood for pie. Had a nice slice of blackberry blueberry pie at Bang Bang in Ravenswood last weekend. Last night stopped at Hoosier Mama in Evanston and bought a slice of peach plum blackberry and a slice of the passionfruit meringue. I have never had such great pie before. The ppb was barely sweetened, with a nice pecan crumble on top. I think I'm going to be obsessed with the passion meringue. I didn't think I liked meringue, but that sweetness was balanced absolutely perfectly with the tartness of the passionfruit. I really wish I didn't have to lay off the desserts for a while.

Peach plum blackberry!! That sounds outstanding. So does that cake you baked. I had the passionfruit and liked it, but I wasn't so over the moon. I think I want to like passionfruit more than I actually do.

I should be laying off dessert, but here we are.

My cake jones didn't come from watching the SNL bit but she made it worse. It looked like it had raspberry filling

First of all, those pictures are just cruel. :P Second, I had no time whatsoever. :( I was kept hoppin' all weekend. But I'm making plans as we speak; I may have to nab a slice on the way home tomorrow night. But I will indeed post the verdict.

Needless to say, there are many variations on layer cakes, based in part on the fillings between cake layers (traditional frosting, buttercream, whipped cream, cream cheese, mousse, etc) as well as the cake layers themselves.

If you've never had the famous Mille Crêpes cake at Lady M, it's pretty damn ethereal, with twenty layers of thin crepes between thin layers of light pastry cream. I've loved it at their boutiques in NYC and Los Angeles, and I just noticed from their website that they have apparently opened one here in Mitsuwa in Arlington Heights. Woo hoo!!! I gotta go check it out!
