Is there anywhere in Chicago where a Porchetta sandwich can be purchased?

This morning I was watching CBS THIS MORNING. There was a 10 minute segment that originated outside of Rome where the reporter Alan Pizzey asked the question "What is the Italian equivalent to fast food sandwich". The answer is the Porchetta sandwich, which is a seasoned roast pork, hand carved onto two massive pieces of bread and the sandwhich is sold by weight. Prepration was of the pork was shown, a dry rub with different sorts of herbs, the meat is hand rolled and tied and then baked.

There is no information on the CBS website, I've already checked. The only thing is a brief description of the show's segment.

    "PORK TO GO
Alan Pizzey introduces us to the Italian version of fast food---pork on a bun."

The sandwich looked outstanding and I'd like to try one.

I have seen porchetta (Italian roasted suckling pig) on various Chicago menus as an entree, but never as a sandwich. I DOES sound delish (or, "yummo," as Rachel Ray would exclaim).

You can buy "porchetta" in the delis of many Italian food stores in Chicago (Joseph's always has it; Caputo's sometimes does), but it's not the same as the slowly cooked pork shoulder (or suckling pig) with garlic, fennel, salt, and pepper that is found in Italy. I've been to a couple restaurants in NY and Boston that do porchetta and it's not bad. But for the reference version, you'd have to travel to Ariccia in Lazio, preferably for the Sagra della Porchetta in the summer. If you do, be sure to get some of the crisp skin.

They used to sell porchetta in the meat section of grocery stores in Corvallis, Oregon. I always thought it was a local specialty until this thread. It was basically a pork loin with a spicy dry rub, very tasty.

I don't know about it as a sandwich, but they had a lovely porchetta Saturday at Butcher and Larder.

During a recent visit to GNR Riviera, I noticed they have porcetta listed as a sandwich option. I haven't tried it, but I would imagine it's pretty good.

Purple Pig has one, or they used to at least. They make porchetta in house.

Central Kitchen and Tap does a fine porchetta sandwich. They are at the corner of Central and Lawrence.

And Porchetta is the sandwich of the day for Sundays at Eataly's rotisserie. I've never tried it but really enjoy their prime rib sandwich so suspect it's quite good. Pricey but since in the rotisserie section, they seem to use really quite great meat and let it stand on its own, maybe worth a test run.

I've had the porchetta at The Publican and PQM. The best version by far is their porchetta sandwich at the Logan Square farmer's market. Something about reheating/searing on a flattop and putting it on their bread gets me every time.

I'll second the above - I had the PQM porchetta sandwich at the market yesterday and it was fantastic. $12 is a bit steep for a market lunch, but I'd definitely consider getting it again.

Had a Porchetta sandwich at Davanti Enoteca (River North) yesterday.

The Big Pig shaved porchetta, sharp provolone, calabrian chili, braised rapini, toasted Italian bread

Veggies weren't quite distributed equally, and the sandwich was larger than necessary. Those quibbles aside, it had good flavor.

FYI - the porchetta sandwich at Publican Quality Meats is only available on weekends. I found out the hard way today.

Yes. Mentioned in the PQM threads, I think. Get there early, and you might get to see the porchetta arrive crackling hot. I enjoyed my pound of end-cut pork and a simple loaf a lot more than the official sandwich. No gilding is needed for that incredible meat.

Thirded. This is one of the best things I ate all last year.

I'll also add that Nico has a porchetta sandwich on the lunch menu that was very solid, although pretty pricy at $17
