I'll be in Schaumburg on Sat. Anyone have suggestions regarding favorite restaurants serving Mediterranian food such as Moroccan, Turkish, Greek, etc. in the area. Thanks,

I tried Greek Village Taverna about 2 years ago. It was not good.

Yanni's in Arlington Heights is pretty good for the suburbs.

Is this opinion based on a recent experience?

We have not been to Yanni's in a couple of years, based on having several successive mediocre meals. It used to be quite good, and we used to visit frequently.

Very little in terms of Moroccan or Turkish in that area.
You could try Pita House on Roselle; at least the prices are reasonable.

I have been to Yanni's three times in the past eighteen months and found the food and the service to be excellent.

I had some kind of sampler dish. The other dishes on the menu might be better.

My dinner there last summer was similarly excellent.

Any other suggestions besides Greek restaurants? My girl friend and I are discovering Indian and Koren food too. We like Curry Hut in Highwood and Wooil in Wheeling but go to those two places frequently.

Any other unusual ethnic restaurants in the Schaumburg area. Arlington Heights would be on the way to Schaumburg.

Schaumburg has a huge Indian population, so you have tons of options if you choose to go that route. My current favorite is India House (721 W Golf Rd). Most of the other places are good (Udupi Palace, Gaylord of India, Raj Palace), but I don't have recent experience so I can't vouch for them.

Rich and I grabbed a quick bite at Yanni's last night and have nothing but good things to say. We enjoyed a cold appetizer platter with tzatziki, a feta salad, an eggplant salad, and taramosalata. While none was mind-blowing, all were enjoyable, and there really was enough food for 4-6 people as an appetizer (more than half went home with us). For my main, I ordered the grilled octopus (on the appetizers part of the menu). The octopus was executed well, both charred and really tender. Rich went with the gyros platter, and he was pleased with it. The meat was nicely seasoned, with just the right amount of crispiness.

The service was friendly and efficient.

I don't think Yanni's is destination dining, but it compares favorably to similar Greektown restaurants and I wouldn't hesitate to eat there again.

My girl friend and I decided to go to the Mitsuwa Marketplace in AH and cruise the food court. Neither of us have been there in years.

Any suggestions on eat-in food place to try and those to avoid?

Grumpy 50 year old here. The marketplace has gotten very expensive. I liked it better when the land was Klem's nursery.
Late to the thread but there used to be an Armenian place close by that had very private booths. They were circular and only allowed one person to enter at a time. The BEST place for HS dates as the owner was a romantic and often refused to bring the bill if it was reported back to him that things were "going well".
I flew into the area with my GF at the time to get engaged there - he was thrilled remembering me. (She was killed by a drunk driver soon thereafter - the place closed before I could fly in the current wife).

Without a doubt, eat at Santouka Ramen.

For Indian I reccd Vishnu Vilas, serving a lunch buffet for $9.99 that has many unique South Indian Dishes, that
will broaden you understanding of Indian Food. For example , there was a savory carrot and coconut side dish there-
that hails from the Tamil Naadu region that I really enjoyed.
An abundant supply of crispy Papadam and fresh Nan & Dosa's brought for each guest.
Make sure to try their Chai Tea which is kept in a coffee percolator- very tasty.
The Butter Chicken they serve is full of flavor and well balanced in spices.

On Sunday's they feature a buffet that includes Dosa (very South Indian!) + Bombay-style Chat, with the price being higher on the weekends-
$11.99.
My only complaint (facility -wise) is the carpeting in the Dining Room seemed 'sticky" the day we were there.....but, otherwise
the silverware and bathrooms were very clean.

just an FYI, Yanni's is under new ownership. I believe within the last year or so? We had the 'my big fat greek brunch' several months ago and the owner sat down for a while. Quite a delightful man. And so passionate about his restaurant. The food was great, the service was as well. As soon as you sit down, out comes a plate of wonderful bread with greek yogurt that was heavenly. With this was some feta cheese and olives. They had a couple of brunch staples, like bacon and sausage. But, there was also mutiple salads, lamb stew, leg of lamb, saganaki flamed tableside, moussaka, dolmades, pastistio, grouper, lemon chicken, hummus, gyros, greek chicken and on and on..... It was really delicious.There was live entertainment, people dancing, etc.

Hi- I've never been to it, but isn't there a Sushi Station somewhere near Schaumburg? It was just featured on Check Please a few weeks ago, and it looks kind of interesting. All their food is in compartments on this conveyor belt, and as it is going by, you select whatever looks good. Apparently this type of restaurant is common in Japan. It sounds like it is fairly inexpensive too. Everybody on Check Please loved it. I know that there are several branches of this restaurant. Maybe somebody that lives out that way, can supply more information about it. Hope this helps, Nancy

I always assumed it was your typical suburban strip mall sushi place, so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the Check, Please episode.

From the website, the Elgin location looks really impressive!

I have been to the Elgin location. I think it's pretty gimmicky, the sushi is average at best.

The earlier post about Sushi Station reminded me of one of my first trip to Japan. I stumbled across a similar place in Tokyo. The prices were reasonable but the sushi and sashimi were well below the norm in Tokyo. I would think the same is true in the States.

My girl friend and I opted for the Mitsuwa Marketplace on Sat. night. We took Ronnie Suburban's suggestion and ordered from Santouka. I had the set with ramen, a hard-boiled egg in soy sauce and the ikura (salmon roe) rice. The ramen was indeed wonderful but the portion of ikura was generous and some of the best I've ever had. All of this for less than $12.00!

My girlfriend order the ramen too, but went and got some nori (seaweed) from the produce department since none of the vendors had a nori salad which she enjoys.

Mitsuwa Marketplace is only 30 minutes from home and we might visiti the place more often.

Wondering if anyone has a sweet spot for a takeout lunch bargain. Ethnic of any kind. Looks like I'll be about a 1/2 mile SW of where Golf and Higgins cross. Just wondering if anyone has anything of interest for this.

I think that you are not far from Daruma Restaurant in Schaumburg. They specialize in homestyle Japanese food.

You might also be interested in trying out Hakka Wok. The owner was the manager/chef at Hok Wok Village. I ate at Hot Wok Village a couple of times before, but not Hakka Wok. This restaurant serves Indo-Chinese cuisine. I would assume that the food is similar to what I had at Hot Wok. I remember the food as being very spicy and nothing like the Indian food nor Chinese food that I was accustomed to eating.

That's right near Taste of Thai. They offer carry-out; I've never done carry-out from there, but have dined in numerous times for lunch and dinner and it's always been very very good.

This was my favorite place when it was under the old ownership. I used to go once a week. After it changed owners (a couple of years ago), it was not as good.

Falafil Hut is in the same shopping center as Taste of Thai. I've only been there once. It's a hole in the wall. But my recollection is that the food was tasty if not especially quick. Phone in and take out would seem to be the way to go. Only a couple of tables.

I really enjoy the House of Pho. It's in the strip mall next to the White Castle on Golf. There is also a Unix Mart there. I think it is the one of the better pho's to be had outside of the city area.
