The city of Chicago will finally get its first Steak ‘N Shake next week. The popular regional fast-food chain, known for its “steakburgers,” will open to the public on September 20 at 1322 S. Halsted Street near UIC, store owner Melvin Buckley says.

The former location of Jim's Original at Halsted and Maxwell Street. It has had its signage up for a while, I guess I should have commented.

In 1976-77, Steak 'N Shake withdrew from the Chicago area. I had a friend who was especially affected by the news.

When I was a kid and we moved from Indianapolis to Kentucky my Dad missed Steak 'N Shake so much he got together a group of investors and tried to get the franchise rights for the area, only to eventually be told that Lexington was reserved for corporate owned stores only (which they didn't get around to for another 25 years). Traditionally most of their restaurants (over 75%) were corporate owned, but a post on their website says that they're franchising 400 of their 417 company owned restaurants so it looks like they're changing their business model.

They have been regional (Evanston, Rosemont, Downers Grove) for a while so I haven’t been jonesing. It will be nice to have one in the city proper (although that is a difficult location for parking).

I seem to remember that Maid-Rite (or some such oddity) had opened an outpost in Lincoln Park a while ago?

I see that it didn’t make it. :(

We've had a few in NW Indiana (Schererville, Merrillville) for at least 20 years.

Holy cow, there was a Maid-Rite here? (And, yes, there was--there's [very favorable] Yelp reviews for it. Looks to me like it lasted from approximately Sept 2012 to April 2013. Well, that was a short stint.) I wish I had heard about it. Not that I particularly crave Maid-Rite, but it's a fun change of pace.

Really talking that a 20 minute drive to get one from Chicago.

The Schererville location is an hour and if that was the closest I’d be jonesing.

Good thing we have a Schoops too. :)

    HI,

Has anyone ever encountered a Shake & Steak? If yes, do you know if there is a connection to Steak & Shake?

Can you provide a source for the Shake & Steak?

    Google failed to provide results.

A friend in Iowa inquired and I was trying to help. Sometimes there are questions which rely on gray-matter memory rather than databases.

Having lived in Iowa for most of my life, I've never heard of a Shake and Steak.
