    Mother Lode Burger and side salad at Claim Company in Vernon Hills. Granted, we were at a private event so maybe it's better on a regular basis. However, my salad was so tired, it had probably been made 2 days ahead. I tried to order my burger medium rare but was told the only option was "cooked through." Needless to say, what arrived was a gray, dried-out puck that was damned near a choking hazard. How this place stays in business is beyond me. Burger King would have been better.

    I knew it was wrong when I did it, but I was working late, and it was right downstairs, basically. I knew it was wrong when I ordered it, but I needed to eat and all other options would take so much longer. So I got spaghetti and meatballs from Noodles & Company.

    It made me sad to eat it.

    Mmm, Noodles and Company. Went to the one in N'ville a few times, maybe a decade ago. I am not sure if I stopped going because of the hairball (probably not), or simply because I was eating something there one day and realized that if I closed my eyes I would not be able to tell which of their dishes it was. Not easy to make a global array of noodle dishes all taste the same, but they do. I used to know the original executive chef who designed their first menu. Sad story, and not simply because of his Fab Noodles association.

    My offering is Windy City Ribs on Cermak, formerly Rylon's. I have now tried this place once under each owner, and while it is a little better under the new owners (they also own La Cantina, an awful Mexican place on S Michigan) and they were very attentive to our pleasure, it is still awful. No smoke, rubbery ribs, dried out and tasteless brisket. On the plus side, the potato salad was not bad. They claim to have a smoke house (a real house, built on site) in back, and I could smell the smoke as I arrived so I believe there is wood being burnt somewhere in the neighborhood. Sadly it did not make it to the meat, or at least by the time the meat had been held in punishment for its crimes and then abused further while reheating, the smoke was long forgotten. I am curious about that smokehouse, but by the time I eat the awful food, I can't bring myself to ask to see the scene of the crime. If there is any place in Chicago in urgent need of Wiv's wise consultation, this is the place!

    With the new hotels and arena on Cermak, it will be interesting to see whether the passing, tourist trade will be enough to support a lousy BBQ restaurant on the south side. Me, I will go the extra couple of miles to Honey 1.

    Italian Chef Salad (salami, pepperoni, mozzarella, tomato and pepperoncini on romaine with balsamic vinaigrette) at Corner Bakery. Don't fool yourself like I did that this might be edible.

    The turkey chili at Max & Benny's. Calling it chili is an insult to chili. Should just call it what it is....watery bowl of vegetable soup loaded to the brim with beans. Just awful.

    I blame Anton's Fruit Ranch for being closed this week and forcing me to venture out a bit.

    Cracked open a new bottle of the Costco EVOO. It is bitter we decided.

    Ruined our bread. This is the 1st time I experienced this with a bottle of this stuff.

    The beef brisket at Porkchop in the Promenade in Bolingbrook. It needed to be in the smoker/grill for a few more hours. Tough and lots of fat and gristle, not much smoke. And when the waitress asks if I'd like the appetizer before the entree, and I say yes, I expect things in that sequence. Table and floor needed a cleaning with hot soapy water, it wasn't like they were slammed at the time.

    Not that Famous Dave's is the best bbq in the land, but it's only a 5 minute walk away, and incomparably better. Buh-bye greasy floor!

    The inpatient food at Swedish Covenant. The worst was a orangeish cream of cornstarch concoction that was intended to be soup. There was a very strange tasting blueberry muffin and a truly awful fruit cocktail (not even as "good" as the canned fruit cocktail I had as a kid). Probably the best was cheese ravioli which was on the level of a bad frozen entree.

    As soon as I was sprung on Wednesday night I ordered delivery from Aroy.
