When people visit us down there we go to nice resturaunts but most of the people that live there eat at places like this, it great food and it's so cheap it feels like its free - Grab a couple manta ray tacos and a few ice cold beers for a few pennies

Not even a bus ride for me. I've walked by it a hundred times on my way to Rizo's. I'll give it a try.

"WWSJD"

I'm getting a wristband to remind myself.

A few years ago, I worked in a company where a number of guys in the office wore "WWJD" wristbands. They were all rather big guys which led me to query if it stood for "We Want Jelly Donuts".

It's right there a few blocks away- and there are no beggers at Punta Negra.. None..Let me teach you a little trick Jean...Don't say "no" to the beggars because in Mexican "no" means maybe.. Wag your finger at at them, that means "no" to them. They instantly shut up- FYI

I found the time share people worse than the beggars. They were more aggressive and followed us down the street a bit. Relentless in the airport. I didn't find many beggars walking around the old town, except on the Malecon. I think San Francisco has more street people than PV. It was interesting that you can be sitting at one of the restaurants on the beach and people come up to the table trying to sell food. That and the other people hawking trinkets was a bit annoying.

United has a nonstop everyday, it's a pretty quick flight from Denver and the cabs are lined up right outside the door at the tiny airport down there..The cab drivers can get you anything you want and youre in your condo in like 10 minutes..No need to rent a car down there and to me at least it feels like everythings free....America is such a busy serious place, I go down there and it's like taking a breath..I get right down there. I highly recomend it.

I'm aware of where Mismoloya is and how far it is from my condo. I usually choose to stay on my own beach visiting with all of my friends but I do walk extensively so the distance is not an issue.

Our beach is private but some of the natives do occiasionaly park by the road and crawl through the bushes to get on it. Heres me "fishin" for octopuss, otherwise known as Calimari..Lil Precious makes the best Calimari sauce known to man. If we go out there at night with lights there are so many beyond those rocks that you can almost grab them with your bare hands. Delicious

Me too! Same exact thing. I was with a group, and was the only one to eat at a particular US fast food chain at the PVR airport, soda with ice, and the next day, at home, I was in the fetal position wishing for death. Everyone else ok.

As a backstory, I have traveled to Puerto Vallarta many times -- eaten from street vendors, hotels, restaurants -- and never had a problem. . . . other than that one.

I can't imagine how many people have had the same issue. Just when you think it's safe to start consuming ice cubes!

I've been going to PV for many years and I've never gotten sick and none of my family has either. My daughter, who travels the world on business has never gotten sick while traveling but a few days after she and co-workers returned from India, one of them got sick eating from the local salad bar at a big name grocery store.

I've been to PV a few times and I've traveled extensively to countries where I've been advised to not drink the water, but this was my first ever experience with food poisoning. And as I noted above, I and three other friends all had drinks with ice from an American fast food place at the PV airport (three who did not get sick did not get drinks at this establishment). Within 48 hours after these soft drinks, we were dropping like flies. Having eaten together and shared food for a week, it was pretty easy to figure out the culprit of the food poisoning.

There were 5 of us eating off food carts and dining on shucked oysters from a vendor on the beach and nobody got sick. I used to always get sick on a trip to Mexico, but it's been 20 years and I believe things have changed a bit.

I do think there is some luck involved - I've traveled in Mexico many times and my most recent trip was the only one that presented a problem, and only when given ice at the PV airport at an American fast food restaurant. But I ate from street vendors daily and this included onions and cilantro on every taco . . . and never any issues, and I've eaten street food on every trip to Mexico . . . I can't imagine passing up the street food.

We rented a condo at Molino de Agua, a new development on the south side of the Malecon, steps from the beach with fabulous views. That's Oscar's, just across the Rio Cuale. We didn't eat there, as people said it was pricey and not particulary great food. However, they did deliver margaritas to the ladies at the pool. They were happy.

Image

This was the only thing we(Jan) caught on a 5 hour fishing venture-1 spanish mackerel. It sure made a delicious appetizer.

Image

As I mentioned in a previous post, we stayed in for New Years. We bought various foods from vendors along the Malecon, including tacos and cocktail wieners, wrapped in tortilla and slathered with cheese sauce.

Image

Ceviche, with Lana's gourmet touch

Image

Mexican lobsters purchased at the farmers market were the main event

Image

It's not a great picture but you can get an idea how spectacular the fireworks were from our view overlooking the bay

I leave for PV in two weeks. We stay for the month of February. For now, I'm enjoying seeing everyone's pictures and ideas for places to eat. We do a lot of cooking in and going to the fish market down by the cemetary but when company comes, we end up at the restaurants.

I agree. I've eaten street food in Mexico for 25 years and only got sick once when I ate lettuce that came with tacos in a roadside lean to between Acapulco and Mexico City about 1990. It was an absent minded gesture and my in-laws looked at my like I was crazy. Which I was. To quote Tony Bourdain from tonight's show: "You don't stay in business very long by poisoning your neighbors."

Hey everyone!
The Mrs. and I will be in the Puerto Vallarta area from Feb. 17th thru the 23rd. We're staying at a B&B in between Bucerias and La Cruz, it's called Jardin Del Mar.

I'll be renting a car with hopes to really travel around the area with at least a few day trips up the coast and into the mountains. I haven't seen any posts about Tepic or San Sebastian on the board, so hopefully i'll be able to include some posts about that when i get back.

I'd like to thank everyone for the informative reports, I really can't thank you enough! If anyone happens to be traveling there over the same dates, we'd love to meet up sometime for dinner with some one!

Both santander's earlier post and mine referred to San Sebastian. We had lunch in the same place--it may be the only place in the village. I'm frankly not sure that there's enough there to justify more than an afternoon, at most. If you take one of the tours, you'll likely stop at the same tequila distillery and coffee "plantation" we both did as well. Have fun!

P.S. If you're so inclined, I'd also recommend driving about 30-40 minutes south of PV to the Botanic Garden. It's quite place and we spent an entire morning there with no difficulty. They even have a restaurant on the grounds with some nice views (although we had pretty lousy service).
