Lots of little SC towns have a Dukes Barbeque. Its kind of like Ray's Pizza in New York.

The one that you don't want to miss is the all you can eat buffet in Orangeburg, SC next to the Pepsi plant on Whitman Street(there are even two Dukes in Oburg). It is not off I-95. Instead, it is off of 1-26. Warning: they are not wood burners.

Sweatman's in Holly Hill is probably the best wood burning q in the state. However, be warned that they are only open Thuirsday to Saturday.

If Ed Mitchell is still cooking at the Pit in Raleigh, that place is a must stop. Mitchell is simple the greatest pit man whose product I have ever tasted (apologies to GWiv and Robert Adams among others). His whole hog easztern NC que will knick your socks off.

Maurice's Piggy Park in Columbia is a wood cooker and is pretty good. But, it is well off your path of travel.

Maurice is located in the mustard belt of SC...the yellow BBQ sauce is not something everyone likes (for example, my wife hates it). I kinda like it as a "change-up" from our normal fare in GA.

Little500,

You're right outside of Macon. Have you tried Fresh Air?

I have eaten in the one in Jackson recently. The hash was among the best I have ever had. I didn't care for the much praised pork at Fresh Air. I like a little bark in my barbeque and this had practically none. It was lacking smoky flavor as a result.

If I were you, I'd take a detour and go to Scott's BBQ in Hemingway, SC. Ever since I read John T. Edge's NY Times article (make sure to watch/listen to the audio slide show.) on this whole hog, oak/hickory-burning, vinegar sauce moppin' variety store last June, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it as a mandatory stop on my next trip anywhere near there.

While passing through NC, you might also consider hitting Grady's Barbecue (Dudley). Although I personally haven't been, it is definitely on my shortlist of high-touted BBQ places in NC that I would love to hit sometime soon.

You might find this regional BBQ road trip article from the Charleston City Paper useful as well.

I get to Fresh Air as often as possible, but I go to the one in Macon. My usual order is one of the "specials", most often smoked pork sammy. I agree that when they get very busy you will not get a good "mix" of inside/outside. Nonetheless, it's among my favs in middle GA.

Come on down to Dublin, where we have excellent Q at Southern Heritage, Rick's, Elanma, Roberson's, Smokin' Lobos, etc. Folks down this way also like Georgia Bob's in Warner Robins.

I can't help you with any particular place, but if you are using a GPS, there are POI files of BBQ Restaurants Mom And Pop Locations at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/21395.

Fresh air does a Georgia style Brunswick Stew. Its completely different than a Virginia or NC style stew. Its really more of a hash.

Here's a link that describes it a bit more via a recipe. It almost always contains beef, pork and chicken, potatoes, tomatoes, and creamed corn:

Are you talking about URBANNA, VA in the Northern Neck of Virginia? About the ONLY thing that goes on in March that time of year is the Oyster Roast at the fire department which draws everyone in the surrounding communities (and it is held tomorrow). Also, make sure that you find a bottle of the local Northern Neck Ginger Ale. one of the better hot gingerales in the country.

Kings BBQ is the local favorite and their specialty is pulled pork from smoked pork shoulders.

My favorite is a bit harder to find and is a small stand at the outskirts of Petersburg. Their specialty was pulled pork bbq with a mustard based sauce. This is a stand with a few picnic tables. Nothing fancy. A good friend of mine, Ms. Rawlings, started this stand with her husband about 80 years ago and she passed away 20 years ago at about 90.

It would be a waste to drive through Petersburg without a stop at the Blandford Church, a shrine to fallen Confederate soldiers that feature 13 Tiffany windows. It is worth a stop.

Will, while their stew may not be similar to other styles, I would not go so far as to say it is a hash. It is, after all, served in a bowl (styrofoam) with a spoon and always comes with crackers. Hash has a more solid consistency and is eaten with a fork. And there are as many recipes for stew as there are cooks. For what it's worth I don't believe there is any beef in Fresh Air's version.

Another place with decent 'que around Macon is Fincher's downtown. Down the road in Warner Robins is When Pigs Fly, also mighty tasty, but they do cater to the people from Robins airbase so they have some non-traditional menu items like french fries.

As a native Columbian, I, and most people I know, stopped going to Maurice's a long time ago because of his highly publicized racism. Not a problem for me because I've always been a fan of Little Pigs on Alpine. All-you-can-eat buffet includes mustard, tomato and vinegar-based bbq, great hash, hushpuppies, mac 'n' cheese, banana pudding and sweet tea. Also, they usually always have a whole pig available for you to do your own picking, if desired.

I've always liked Fuller's Old Fashioned BBQ just off I 95 in Lumberton, NC. It's a buffet and I don't remember if they're a log burner or not. They just have a bevy of tasty and unique items on their buffet like chitterlings and gizzards and stuff.

Wilber's in Goldsboro is a bit off I 95, but not too much I think. I don't actually recall, since I'm coming from Raleigh from the west. Regardless, its damn fine 'Q at Wilber's

Here's a great reference site for NC:
