Hi, does anyone know where to get blue moon ice cream in the chicago area? (wicker park/north of that preferable)

searching for it via my usual method is rather futile due to blue moon, the beer.

    thanks

The new-ish ice cream shop on Montrose, just west of Lincoln had a Blue Moon flavor when I was last there. They carry Sherman's brand ice cream.

    Best,

They have it at Sweet Occasions in Andersonville and Lincoln Square.

They have it at Hartigan's in Evanston.

    Hartigan's Ice Cream Shoppe
    2909 Central St
    Evanston, IL 60201
    (847) 491 1232

The ice cream served at Hartigan's is made by Cedar Crest of Manitowoc WI, so presumably any place that serves Cedar Crest ice cream has a good chance of having it. Similarly, Sherman's, of South Haven MI, also makes blue moon ice cream, so any place that serves Sherman's ice cream has a good chance of having it, too. I believe Sweet Treats gets their ice cream from Sherman's. I've read that a place in Downer's Grove called Every Day is a Sundae also gets their ice cream from Sherman's, but I have not been there.

I also read on another forum that this place has blue moon ice cream, but I have not been there, either:

Apparently, the Chocolate Shoppe carries it.

    Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream

I am not familiar with this flavor. I take it that it is blue in color, but what does it taste like? Does the flavor vary from brand to brand?

Yes, they list it on their website, and they describe it as "Creamy ice cream with a "Fruit Loops" cereal flavor and a wacky blue color!"

The Chocolate Shoppe makes their ice cream in Madison WI. Their ice cream is sold in stores with their own name as well as other, non-affiliated stores. Their website lists 23 places in Illinois where it is sold, including 5 in Chicago, of which two are the Sweet Occasions and More mentioned above.

d4v3 wrote:I am not familiar with this flavor. I take it that it is blue in color, but what does it taste like? Does the flavor vary from brand to brand?

Yes, it is blue - usually a bright, shocking blue - and it usually has a vaguely almond-like flavor. At least, the Cedar Crest and Sherman's flavors do; I haven't had the Chocolate Shoppe version.

I was in Hartigan's the other day and I noticed that, in addition to the "plain" blue moon, they also had a variation on it with an additional ingredient mixed in. I think it might have been bits of cookie dough but I could be mistaken on that.

Don't know if you are near a Meijer grocery store, but they sell it there. It's under the Meijer brand of ice cream. It's pretty good.

    thanks for all the replies.

i myself haven't tried it, but various descriptions as well as the cult following it seems to have has captured my attention.

some say it tastes like fruit loops/fruity pebbles. we'll see.

d4v3, I've always agreed with the froot loop description. I used to eat it every summer when I visited my grandparents in Saugatuck, and I always thought it was so cool that ice cream tasted like cereal.

It does taste just like Froot Loops, its GREAT. My favorite is by Cedarburg, but Cedarburg can be hard to find unless you live in or near Wisconsin. Every now and then my husband and I take a trip to Kenosha to do a big grocery shopping at Woodman's, so we stock up on Cedarburg ice cream there.

I also noticed a couple days ago that Cold Stone has a blue ice cream right now, they call it Cotton Candy, but it tastes almost exactly like Blue Moon.

The name of the dairy that makes blue moon ice cream in Wisconsin is Cedar Crest, not Cedarburg. And you can buy their ice cream at Hartigan's in Evanston, Illinois.

    HI,

I saw Blue Moon ice cream at:

    Sweets (candy and ice cream)
    284 E. Deerpath Road
    847-295-1111

Their ice cream is from a Wisconsin dairy, though not Chocolate Shoppe from Madison, WI. I think it was Cedar Crest as suggested by nsxtasy.

Ironically the very next day after seeing it on the menu, there was an article in the Chicago Tribune on this very ice cream.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

My favorite is at Plainwell Ice Cream in Plainwell, MI. I heard that Blue Moon was supposed to be pineapple-flavored.

I was there earlier today. It was indeed bits of cookie dough in blue moon ice cream. The name of the flavor is "Playdough". :)

Woodman's in Carpentersville carrys Blue Moon (Cedar Crest) ice cream. Acutally, Woodman's has a great ice cream and frozen custard selection and the prices are right. My current ice cream favorite is Take 5 by Blue Bunny although the Ben & Jerry Cinnamon Bun flavor is a close second.

I grew up on the stuff! HAdn't had it for years until I found a small place in McHenry that had it. After I moved I thought it was lost to me forever but I found another ice cream place in Lockport that has it (and tons of other good flavors). It does tast almond to me.

Also note that you can order ice cream online for delivery, including the blue moon flavor. The website http://www.icecreamsource.com sells ice cream made by many dairies, including Babcock Hall (University of Wisconsin at Madison), Cedar Crest, Chocolate Shoppe, Door County Ice Cream Factory, and Uncle Harry's. They even pre-package "Blue Moon Survival Kits" with pints of Blue Moon from each of four dairies. For details, click here.

Reviving this thread....Blue Moon Ice Cream is available at Tate's in Wheaton which is downtown on Front Street. If you are in the western suburbs and a Prairie Path biker, you can easily stop at Tate's for a treat. I still have yet to try Blue Moon and hope to soon. I also note they carry two kinds of blueberry ice cream and coconut ice cream as well as cinnamon. These are some hard to find flavors I have noted that they make.

Thank you for the link. One of my co workers makes ice cream for everyone on staff based on their favorite cereal milk (Honey Nut Cheerios ice cream is my favorite, and also, it is the bomb). I think blue moon is Froot Loop-esque, but has raspberry sharpness in there too. I will report back on her efforts.

I was at Strack and Van Til on Elston over the weekend, and saw two different brands with Blue Moon flavors - Hudsonville and Dean's. There was also Blue Bunny ice cream, who had a blue-colored flavor called Blu's Birthday Party.
