    Hey,
I am from India so none of the fish available in markets I eat back here, however, since I live in chicago i was wondering if pomfret is available at any seafood outlets,
Also if anyone has eaten pomfret, do you know any fish that taste similar

the only fish i have tried so far are tuna, swordfish which i hate the texture of, i love tuna raw though, i dont like cod, catfish either, i have only found whitefish and tilapia decent,

    thanks for the help

In general, pomfret is referred to as "butterfish" here. You might find it at ethnic markets: I've seen them frozen whole at Marketplace on Oakton, for instance - though I'd call to make sure they have them in stock. You might also want to try grey sole, grouper or red snapper; I don't know if they're similar to pomfret, but they're closer and more flavorful than the other fish you mention.

Thanks, is there no pomfret available in other markets, does devon have nice indian fish?
I was wondering if popular chains like dicks, etc. keep butterfish or maybe chinatown?

I doubt you'll find it in large chain grocery stores, but you might find it in Chinatown or on Argyle or on Devon - it will take some hunting. Large Asian markets like H-Mart will probably carry it, too - and I think I've seen it at Caribbean markets like Rogers Park Fruit market. Usually, it's sold whole and frozen. What part of town is convenient for you? Do you have access to a car, or will you be using public transportation?

Dirk's has a web site http://dirksfish.com/ where they list what they can get with 24 hour or one week advance notice (in season, weather permitting) and what they normally carry every day. They recommend you call if you want to discuss a special order.

I believe that I have seen pomfret advertised at Fish Corner, at the corner of Cambell and Devon. I don't know anything about their quality, although the store has been there for several years at least. As always, calling first to see if they have what you are looking for is a good idea.

What's your zip code (it'll help direct you to the closest market).

Super H-mart regularly has pomfret for sale. Chinatown Market in Chinatown often has pomfret as well.

At times, pompano is also available - very similar in taste to pomfret (buy typically larger)

Butterfish as Mhays has mentioned is often available at Mitsuwa; This fish also is very similar to pomfret in taste.

Super H Mart, at the SE corner of Oakton and Waukegan, is probably your best bet.

You could also call Burhop's in Plaza del Lago on Sheridan in Wilmette. I'm sure they could special order it for you if they don't carry it. Although, Super H Mart will probably be cheaper.

    Hi,

Once you have your pomfret, will you explain how you cook them? I love the pomfret's I've had in Thai restaurants. I especially like the fried preparation when the fins are crisp and delicious.
