Hi,

A visit to the John J. Boos Outlet is a must when you are in Effingham, IL. Incredibly inexpensive products of every variety and really nice people to help. It's always nice to be driving a truck or van.

There's not much going on during the middle portion of a ride from the city down into the lower Central region of Illinois. But if you ever find yourself in or passing thru Effingham and you're a home "chef" than the John Boos & Company Outlet store is a must in my book. I was glad to have found this rec when looking up on here what others had to say about the popular Firefly Grill which is also in town. We didn't go there but what a stop the John Boos outlet shop is.

We did some talking and I mentioned how I was taking pictures bc I wanted to share his place on a site where people would like to know. So he's been waiting for this post. My bad on the delay! Since 1887 John Boos has been the trusted name for butcher blocks and really anything wood related that can go inside your home. Founder Conrad Boos harvested Sycamore from wooded areas around Effingham, processed it at his sawmill, and then brought it to his blacksmith shop for finishing.

Wonderful assortment of discounted expertly crafted woodwork available

He was telling me how they set up lots of bars and restaurants including Old Town Social here in Chicago. I ended up spending just over $100 but I had to tell Mr. Boos to stop loading the free stuff into my cart. I walked out with a big ass board for dough related projects, a couple of au jus boards, an 'Herb a Round' and also a "Newton Prep Master with Pan" What a steal all of it was. Cleaning supplies so they can last long enough to pass onto my kids were gifted as a friendly gesture since I think he really appreciated the interest me and my friend took. I have dreams of opening a "concept" tavern type of a place and when my dream becomes a reality, I'll be giving the John Boos Company a call. With the holiday season coming before we know it, this is a shop worth taking a ride to. Just thought I'd share here since the site lead me in the right direction. Thanks y'all.

Nice. Did they have any black walnut boards their? They are quite pricey and sold at Sur La Table.

I'd like to give a big shout out to black walnut cutting boards. One of my first purchases when I decided that I wanted to cook for myself was a black walnut cutting board (Approximately 12 X 14). Now, nearly 30 years later, it still looks nearly as good as the day I brought it home, while I've been through several maple and other wood cutting boards since then. I'd love to find another, larger format black walnut cutting board and I may just have to make a trip to Effingham to see what I can come up with.
