Queen of the bento? King of the brown paper bag? This thread is for you to brag. Show us your glossy, curated photos and make the rest of us hungry.
"To get long" meant to make do, to make well of whatever we had; it was about having a long view, which was endurance, and a long heart, which was hope.

Kicking us off with bento 1: vegetable tempura (Andoh's Kansha cookbook), braised potatoes, mixed grains, chocolate mocha (church bazaar purchase), apple.

    Hi,

I like this idea for an ongoing thread. I almost never pack a lunch. The few times a year I do, I never quite impress me.

I remember reading an article where a woman packed her husband's lunch daily. Something happened in human discourse that really got her dander up. She decided to make superior lunches for her husband.

One that stands out was a chilled lobster with various sauces. She kept the lobster cold by taking the gel out of freezer gelpacs and putting the gel into ziploc bags. This allowed her to mold the gel to the food to keep it colder.

All the people who left for lunch would linger to see what came out of the husband's lunch box. I get the impression it was far better than what they enjoyed.

I read this article maybe 25-30 years ago and I still relish it today.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

P.S. My lunch today was homemade split pea soup. I had a ham bone I wanted to get rid of.

I'll have to figure out how to post a picture, but I'll describe what I had for lunch a couple days last week: chilled shrimp, blanched asparagus and sugar snap peas, carrot chips and cherry tomatoes with lemon chive mayo. It was delish! Blackberries for dessert.

    That sounds excellent.
Homemade carrot chips? I'm plotting a mezze lunch, with rice, lentil salad and muttabal.
