I have heard that Aldi will begin carrying Almond flour for all those that like to low carb it.

What I found rather disappointing in last month's visit to Aldi is the proliferation of organic, gluten-free and other SKUs that they are carrying. Since they are a limited SKU operation, this is eliminating quite a few normal grocery items from their operations.

I am beginning to believe that they are falling into the trap of trying to be everything to everybody.

Hi- I think that Aldi's is heavily promoted on the gluten free boards because their prices are more reasonable, and the more gluten free stuff they sell, the more they are likely to carry. The organic canned goods and pasta I can understand, but I have a hard time believing that the organic fresh produce is a big seller there. Every time I look at their organic fresh produce,it is almost as expensive as Whole Foods, and the quality isn't nearly as good.

Hi- Supposedly some Aldi's have organic EVOO on clearance for $2.49 a 16.7 ounce bottle. Has anybody tried it? I am leery about buying olive oil there because of all the fake oil being sold. Last time I bought EVOO, I bought one of the house brands at Trader Joe's , and I am happy with it Thanks, Nancy

Well, Aldi just opened a can of worms it really did not want to.
One of its new craftbeer offerings has the brand name "Revolution Harbor" :!:
I think what is the parallel beer it was trying to compare it to is something from Samuel Adams [e.g.: Boston Beer].
But it has been in Chicago for decades.
How is it unaware that Chicago already has a packaging brewery called Revolution? (And that its beers are being exported to other states, and even to Japan.)
I would think the "cease-and-desist" letter has already been sent.

Hi- Aldi's has just announced that they are removing artificial colors, MSG, and partially hydrogenated oils from all of their exclusive brand food products. Aldi's also has a $5 off $30 coupon in tomorrow's Chicago Tribune. I think it is good through 10/14. I don't know if I have ever spent $30 at Aldi's in one visit, but I never buy meat there. Hope this helps, Nancy

The last time Aldi had the $5 off $30 coupon, I stocked up on toiletries, some of which are name brand, as well as stuff like zippered plastic bags, foil, etc.

Does anybody here buy Aldi's bags of flour which sell for $.99? I personally love King Arthur flour, and I have a hard time believing that Aldi's flour is anywhere near as good, and plus all they have is all purpose flour. On One of the other boards that I post on though, I recently extolled the virtues of King Arthur, saying that yes it was much more expensive, but it was also much better flour. Somebody on that board who is a professional baker, claims though that she has tried both of them, and she thinks that Aldi's is just as good, and she claims that she uses Aldi's when making bread. It seems like Aldi's flour would not have enough gluten to make good bread. I am interested in hearing about others experience with Aldi's flour. Thanks, Nancy

    HI,

I have used Aldi's flour without any issue. I do not believe I paid 99 cents for it, are we talking the same flour?

I think all Aldi's has is one all purpose four. Maybe they have lowered the price since the last time you bought it. Currently it is $.99 for I assume a five pound bag. Did you use Aldi's flour when you made bread though? It seems like it would not have enough gluten to make decent bread.

There was gluten enough to make acceptable bread with it.

That pretty much leaves Woodman's and Winco Foods as the two hold out who do NOT accept credit cards.

    Joe,

That coffee is as labelled: a German coffee. It'll be a bit richer than American coffees, but that's not a particularly dark roast. Nice coffee. I used it in a French press successfully, altho' it's a bit fine.

Be sure to check the 'sell-by' date on it: much better when fresh!

    Geo,

I will try the coffee next week when I use up the rest of my San Francisco Bay French Roast coffee. I will let you know what I think.

Then it will be back to Community Coffee dark roast for a couple of months as I need to make an order to get some tea in the house.

Unfortunately, it is getting to the end of the coffee drinking season.

I finally cracked open the Aldi coffee this morning after using up my supply of San Francisco Bay Dark Roast coffee.

Initially, I was disappointed. The coffee appeared to be very light for a medium roast and the coffee was ground much finer than nearly coffee that I have seen.

However, the purpose of buying the coffee was drinking it. It was a very good coffee with very little acid and very smooth. It is a nice change and I will probably buy some more in September when I get to an Aldi store.

My next coffee will be the Winco Foods Dark Roast on my next trip to Phoenix. Then, it will be back to Communiyu Coffee for a while.

Glad you liked it Joe. I liked it best when used in a French Press coffeemaker. It retains some body that way, which it loses in a paper filter.
As you note, it's a very smooth coffee.

Geo, not sure if you can do the pre-packaged grounds of Jacob's Kronung, but if so, you should start checking Shop And Save weekly if you have one in your area. I drink coffee for the quick caffeine hit once in a while, so I don't really have a strong affiliation with one brand. Jacob's is a brand that Shop And Save carries in 9oz bricks. I'm not 100% sure if they have the whole bean or not, but I can guarantee you that I've bought both the Gold brand, and the Kronung brand for 99c or less. It's a fine grind, but nothing wrong with it for my novice tastes. The gold is actually on sale this week for 79c. I've noticed that they are short dated, but my freezer works just fine. I haven't tried the Gold yet, still working through the Kronung. My assumption is that the Gold will be a lighter roast.

Tnx SeeBee, I'd really love to be able to take part in that *great* deal. IMHO, "Gold" is a little lighter than "Kronung", but also a very nice, rich coffee.
Unfortunately, Aldi is the closest thing we have to a foreign "tinged" store in Upstate New York.... The closest ethnic grocery is in Albany, 150 miles away. There's everything in Montréal, of course, but it's always expensive--that coffee would most likely cost $US 5-7, which is way more than I'd want to pay. There's lots of ethnic stores in Burlington VT, but that's ten miles of Lake Champlain and $22 of ferry ride to get to.
Love all the MittelEuropa stuff in that newspaper ad! Wow! Now we've got several decent Polish delis in MTL, but it sure would be cool to have it available in a supermarket.
Anyway, fun to look through the ad for sure. Tnx! Too bad they don't have a online store!

The Chipotle chicken salad at Aldi is pretty good. Its the little salad bar I believe. I had it for lunch and it was a pretty good rendition. And its lactose free which makes me happy.

They also sell Turano bread at my Aldi as well as Frozen Home Run Inn Pizza. The large "fresh" pizzas for five bucks can't be beat. Hint: Buy the cheese only and put your own fresh toppings on so you get quality meat and veggies on your pizza.

What do they charge at Aldi for a loaf of brioche? Do they sell buns, too? I've been buying sliced brioche loves and buns at Mariano's, but they charge nearly $5.00 for a loaf or a pack of 6 buns. I usually only need a few buns before they start to stale, so the rest often go to waste. If I could save a few bucks, at least I wouldn't feel so bad about not using them up.

The brioche loaf at Aldi's cost less than $4. I don't recall seeing brioche buns, though they do have pretzel buns and potato buns. Note the potato buns are not always available.
