Isn't Three Brothers, the Serbian place in Milwaukee, in one?

I was just talking about that place with somebody, can't remember who now...

Why yes it is at that. (Scroll down.)

Not my "favorite" sign by any stretch, but you just gotta wonder about the brain-power behind the wiseacre Scrabble-fiend who did this to a sign on Grand Cayman:

Image

P.S. I didn't stay at the Sunshine Suites Resort; I was just walking by.

Alas, I didn't get a photo, but either wind or a similar minded prankster removed a single B from a Dairy Queen I saw in Texas, leaving this sign:

ENJOY
FROZEN
LIZZARD

There are Schlitz bas-relief signs along Damen at Grand and at Armitage.

This post is about a sign that is no more, only to be replaced by a TOTALLY INFERIOR sign.

Anybody remember the awesome sign at Stanley's Fruit Market, with ol' Stan riding a flying watermelon while smoking a pipe?
http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/XELQz_b1 ... eilmVkYENQ

GONE!

It's now the most boring thing I've ever seen: It's white, and is says STANEY'S across the center. That's it. The top half of the letters is red, the bottom half blue, with a white streak going through, just like how it was at the top of the old sign, only bigger. Very pseudo-patriotic with no character whatsoever.

Boo hiss, Stanley, I spit on your sign.

Back in the day when most kids were being bribed with happy meals I was always paid off in fried shrimp from the long gone Joe's on the river. This was a really cool spot for a shrimp shack. Ive hoped for years it would turn into a dive bar or smoke shack.

I have one that I unfortunately did not get a picture of before it was changed again (and the creator likely fired):
THE BOSS TOLD ME TO CHANGE THE SIGN, SO I DID
(Hooters on Higgins just east of Cumberland)

And one I have a hard copy photo of so I don't know how to post it:
CHECK MY NUTS
(McDonalds on Harlem, just north of Lawrence)

I'm not kidding.

Nothing to do with food, and I hope I'm not repeating something I mentioned before, but:

On the way to the Santiago airport, there was a billboard for one of the Chilean airlines saying, "Cada día, mejoremos" -- "Every day, we're getting better."

Every time I saw it on the way to the airport, I thought, call me when you think you've really got it down.

Just a quickie on the Bong sign. My dad and my uncle Bob both knew Dick Bong. Bob was a long-time city councilman in Superior, and one of his major goals in life was to get the Interstate bridge between Superior and Duluth named after Bong. He finally succeeded. Just south of Superior there's a memorial with a beautifully displayed P-38J Lightning--Bong's mount--right in the middle of the road. Very cool, as cool in fact as the B-25 Mitchell bomber hovering over the entrance to MKE.

yeah. cool.

but not even half as cool as the guy on in my dorm who somehow managed to steal that sign, bring it back to champaign, and hang it on the wall next to the pink floyd poster and tie-dye sheet. man, did we get some laffs from that!

oh, and those chinese menu translations are hilarious. i have this one bookmarked from years ago and i die laughing every time i read it. apologies if this is a re-post--i may have found it here in the first place.

funniest menu ever

I'm going to have to scan this one at a later date, but I have a photograph from my first trip to Spain of a cafe menu in Santillana del Mar. My favorite menu items:

- Peppery peppers
- Clams in a seamanlike sauce

The former was pimientos padrones, the latter, almejas a la marinera.

An old Route 66 staple

anyone visit this place when they rode it as a kid? I have a sick obsession with Route 66 and its food history.

Da Beef,

I have been there several times.

Maybe 15 years ago, I went for several years on the Illinois Route 66 caravan through the Route 66 monuments and relics. The Pig Hip was a regular stop on these. I went back a few times by myself when either driving to the State Fair or beyond.

Unfortunately I don't have a clear recollection of the food. It was an experience more than a very memorable sandwich to me.

Regards,

A little bit of heaven on the Delmarva Peninsula in Metompkin, VA. Folks drive from miles around for their fried soft-shell crab sandwiches. Insanely great fish, shrimp, hush puppies and crab cakes, too. As you can see, the signs in front of their shanty are as handcrafted as their food:
