We talked about this upthread, about a month or so ago. Not sure why drift matters, as long as we're productively talking about food.

Because people (like me) see the topic of White Castle, are interested in comments related to White Castle, and look, only to be frustrated when the comment has no relevance to the topic advertised. So what that its about food--about all the board is.

If this were on "Eating out in Chicagoland" forum, I would agree with your comments. 'Other Culinary Chat' forum, described as, "Food media and other items of (at least somewhat) food-related interest." For this sub-forum, the discussion is fitting.

That's fine; I'll stop perusing this thread. Perhaps in that forum, no thread headings should be used then. When one selects "view active topics" it is usually the topic that is searched and not the name of the forum.

Oh well.

Clearly everything here must be on topic, because the thread is somehow strangely addictive. And do note the subject line gives you fair warning:
Quote:
Far Worse Than I'd Imagined

I don't believe we've yet discussed the possibility that drugs are involved, and that's why people keep eating sliders (by which I mean, drugs IN the sliders, since it is obvious that drugs and alcohol are often involved in the decision to go to White Castle.)

Where this thread went off its rails, some 20 posts ago, is where the graphic comparing McDonald's menu items to ingredients for home-cooked meals was introduced. There's a longer discussion of it here, on the FlyerTalk web site, if anyone's interested. I personally think it's ridiculous to compare raw chicken and dried beans to cheeseburgers and fries, but I can see how opinions could differ on that point. We can't even agree on whether this subject should have been raised in or moved to its own thread, with an appropriately descriptive title, or merged into a more appropriate thread, such as one on the subject of food deserts, rather than in a thread on one particular fast food chain.

The first observation re: "ridiculous digressions" was made way more than 20 posts ago.

When I'm at a cocktail party, and the conversational subgroup I'm in gets boring, or let's say "ridiculous," I politely walk away.

Don't take it personally; it wasn't your comparison; it's floating around multiple food-related blogs and forums, obviously.

No need, either, to put quotation marks around the words "ridiculous digression," as I never used that phrase.

What I did say was that I personally think the comparison--of fast food to home-cooked food ingredients--is ridiculous. I do. I think it's a straw man. Did anyone in this thread, or in any other thread on this site, ever try to make a serious argument for fast food being more economical than home-cooked food? (Just trying to think of how to structure a search to find the answer to that question makes me too tired to try.) In my opinion, it's a straw man. Just my personal opinion.

Others may disagree. There is disagreement in this conversation, and disagreement in the conversation on FlyerTalk to which I posted the link. I said I can see how people can disagree about it. We can also disagree on whether that subject is pertinent to the title of this thread. You can't just tell people to walk away whenever they disagree with you. I mean, you can, but, here's-what-I-think-and-keep-what-you-think-to-yourself-and-buzz-off isn't the basis of conversation.

Are you kidding? No one is telling anyone to do anything, and it has nothing to do with agreement or disagreement. I want people to contribute, and I don't care if they digress in ways they and others find interesting, but I certainly think that if you don't find those digressions interesting that you're doing anyone, particularly yourself, a favor by forcing yourself to continue the conversation along the lines of this particular, and one of many, digressions in this thread. I hope you continue to join in, but if things get too silly or pointless for you, I'd recommend taking some time off and coming back later; my guess is that the topic will have changed again by then, and that's fine.

And with that, I'm going to politely walk away from this thread for a while.

Well, no. I was commenting on the silly ("ridiculous") evolution of the thread. There was no complaint at all, much less one about it being a digression or to keep the thread tightly focused. I enjoy ridiculous conversation, as is evidenced by my participation in this thread. I mean, come on. This is the most entertaining LTH thread I've read, and I'm not exaggerating. I thought for sure this would have been closed about two hundred posts ago because it seems every time an LTH thread gets somewhat interesting to me, it gets locked.

Hi,

I am listening to this competitive eater discuss his favorite White Castle recipe:

White Castle Pate

Take a bunch of White Castle burgers, throw them in to a food processor or blender. Blend until smooth. Serve on toast points.

When served at Thanksgiving to the uninitiated, he doesn't tell them what it is until they tried it. It quickly disappears.

Regards,

C2, is that burgers alone, or burgers IN buns?

The serious answer is that it is everything: pickle, buns, meat, onions....

The White Castle slider turkey stuffing recipe usually gets some internet love every November, including (if I'm not mistaken) on this forum. I haven't tried it myself, but I think some here have. Apparently it's made with everything but the pickles.

I would try the stuffing but not the pate. The idea of white castle ground to a pate and chilled is revolting to me. but maybe if you like chopped liver you would like it.

i'm the opposite--being able to see the "parts" would be like eating a hot dog made from rough chopped pieces...probably NOT gonna do that. Pureed, chilled and spread on a cracker, I would try. Maybe.

Hi,

You really need to get acquainted with White Castle recipes. Creativity is boundless when there is a prize involved. At a quick glance, I found White Castles in latkes, dim sum, Calzone, Castle Balls (a variant of Swedish meatballs) and enchiladas.

Many ethnic cuisines can be improved with the additional of a White Castle burger.

Regards,

It really cannot get any better than that!

Is anybody up for a White Castle potluck? We could make all these recipes, then congregate at a White Castle (hopefully) to share and experience.

Brilliant. I would love to attend that event -- I'd probably eat first, but anything this freakish would be worth witnessing.

I would be up for a White Castle pot luck. I would find something to make of them. I am game. If stuff was good, David Hammond would have to change this thread to "White Castle--Far Better than I'd Imagined." Wouldn't that be a cold day in hell.
