Hi- Did anybody see the two segments on the PBS News Hour this last week on the use of antibiotics in chicken and pork? The segment on the first day told of a pig farmer who was routinely giving antibiotics to his pigs, and then 30 years ago he was gored by an animal, and developed a bad infection, and none of the antibiotics the doctors tried worked. They finally found out what the infection was caused by, and they discovered that there was one antibiotic that would cure the superbug this farmer had. He then decided to change his farming techniques, and he quit using antibiotics unless they were absolutely necessary. He also started raising the pigs more humanely.

The second segment was about the use of antibiotics in the raising of chickens. One of the persons they interviewed was Jim Perdue who has essentially done away with routine use of antibiotics. I thought that most farmers had done away with the routine use of antibiotics in chicken, but they said that 70% of the poultry farmers still use it routinely. Jim Perdue said they stopped using antibiotics on a routine basis, because that is what his customers wanted. Perdue is the 4th largest producer in the country. They also interviewed a few people at Sanderson's Farm. Sanderson's Farm still routinely gives their chickens antibiotics. Their veterinarians claim that there is still a benefit to the chicken to continue using them. The great majority of the antibiotics used in this country are used on animals, and they had several medical experts that they interviewed for the story that said that this is going to have to stop, because many of the antibiotics being used today, are becoming resistant to the superbugs that are out there.

I used to think that Perdue chicken was no better than any other factory farmed chicken, but this segment portrayed them in a more positive light. Besides not routinely giving them antibiotics, they also feed their chickens a strictly vegetarian feed. Thanks, Nancy
