    Maxwell Street Foray, November 18

    Image

On November 18th, the Sunday before Thanksgiving, we will meet at 10:00 AM in front of The White Palace on the northeast corner of Roosevelt and Canal.

Some must-stops will be Ricos Huaraches (see pic), the fresh churros place, Tamal Oaxaca, Rubi’s (tacos al pastor), Manolo’s (pork in mole), many stands selling produce and food-to-be-cooked (which I intend to use for non-traditional Thanksgiving sides) and lots of other places for tube sox, dental supplies, etc.

So far, the following people are on the list (if you want to come, post to this thread):

    1. Jygach
    2. Josephine
    3. Nr706
    4. Happy_stomach
    5. Benscanlon
    6. dippy-do-da-egg
    7. JiminLoganSquare
    8. Mrs.JiminLoganSquare
    9. Bruce
    10. Saint Pizza
    11. Jimthebeerguy
    12. YourPalWill
    13. C2
    14. MHays
    15. Sparky
    16. kanin
    17. threadkiller
    18. crrush
    19. dickson
    20. the ramons

My cell is 708-902-3969 – if you get to the market and can’t find us, just call.

The market is open all year, and these autumn weekends are some of the best times to go: not too hot, not too cold: good weather for hunkering down on hot huaraches, etc.

Parking information would be great. I might be able to convince the BnC to come if we can park.

One. DO NOT PARK IN THE DOMINICK'S/WALGREEN'S LOT unless you enjoy searching for your vehicle only to learn it's been towed and you have to surrernder your first-born to get it back.

I get to the market via the CTA and, therefore, have little experience looking for parking spaces in the neighborhood - which is steadily getting more congested.

    Very good question about parking.

I come in from the northside of the market, and there are parking lots ($3 to park, I think, though probably higher in some places), but I have never used them; I always find a place on the street, though it may take 5-10 minutes and you may need to park about 3 blocks away.

You may have more luck finding a space if you park on the southside of the market on the other side of the viaduct, south of 14.

There are usually many people coming and going, so spaces do open up with regularity.

Absolutely right, and ditto for the Dunkin' Donuts lot.

Here's an idea that I've never tried: there's are new stores all along Canal just north of the market; I wonder if you could park in their lots for free/low price if you buy some small thing at their store.

Don't try that in the Whole Foods lot, where they've got a security guard staked who is almost certainly happy to boot/tow you if he sees you head for Canal St.

On my last trip to the Maxwell Street market in April or May, I took the METRA rail into Oglivie station and walked down Canal St. Since the 1st train leaves Crystal lake at 8:30 am on Sunday, I got to town around 10 am. There were TONS of open meters all along Canal St. approximately 3-5 blocks NORTH of the market

I have a spare parking pass that allows you to park on Jefferson, Des Plaines or Clinton--free for the first person who PMs me. (Of course, I'll need it back.) EDIT: Congratulations nr706, lucky winner of the temporary parking pass. This contest is now closed.

I'm going to try to meet ya'll, but I have friends in town who may want to hit the market earlier or later.

Just in case I don't make it--add Lencho's tacos and the pupusa stand to your list-o-places to graze...the hot sauce and vinegar-y slaw at the pupusa stand (W. side of street, just north of Roosevelt) is most excellent, and Lencho's is the only stand at the market that grills meat over live coals.

If the weather isn't rain/snow, I'm going to try very hard to make it. Getting to the "new" Maxwell St. has been one of my local goals for the year, and a tour by the esteemed Mr. Hammond sounds like the best way to do it.

That's good news, C2. Perhaps you can teach the next generation how to eat a pork chop sandwich. :D

I just want to say I am so excited about my first trip to Maxwell Street and the possibility of trying another first - eyeball tacos (if only to be able to provide riveting accounts of the experience to astonished and horrified dining companions)

Weather reports indicate Sunday will be looking good; if it turns out weather is prohibitively inclement, which is very unlikely, I will post Plan B here.

We’ll meet, as planned, at White Palace at 10:00AM; if you didn’t already sign up, no worries, just come; if you come late, no problem; call my cell (708-902-3969) and we’ll meet up.

In addition to satisfying immediate hunger needs, I’ll be shopping for ingredients for Thanksgiving mole, and I encourage you to consider this trip an opportunity to stock up on Mexican wrestling garb, dental equipment and, of course, tube sox.

Look forward to seeing you all Sunday.

I'm afraid I won't make it to Maxwell St Market tomorrow after all. I apologize for the late, late notice. I've been keeping a crazy schedule lately, and I think it's finally catching up to me. I'm going to try my hand at sleeping in tomorrow. Please take lots of pictures; I will look forward to the report.

I can't believe I'm choosing sleep over eyeball tacos!
