That's the best they can do? And Superdawg is thier one and only pick for Chicago? Not much of a list IMO.

I came across a brand of hotdogs that I have never seen before called Bobak's natural sheep casing at Valli's Produce @ $2.99 lb. Has anyone tried these? And what's with the sheep casing? Thanks

I've always been partial to the Coney Islands in Detroit. Fortunately, a relative of them started one here in South Bend and is just as good. Great homemade soups too.

It appears that Bobak's exclusively uses sheep casings for their dogs.

I seem to recall seeing a few boxes from Bobak's behind the counter at Jim's Original. Can anyone confirm who supplies Jim's with their stuffed meat goodies?

Kim,

We like Bobak's a lot. The Wife buys them from, I think, Costco, but they may also be carried by Jewel. For the price, they are a good hot dog.

I've bought the Bobak wiener in several incarnations from the Bobak's store on Archer in Chicago (there's also one in Burr Ridge), which is way worth a visit. The advantages of buying in the store are that the franks are fresh (no vacuum-sealed sarcophagi), and the stores offer a big selection of all kinds o' wurst and other prepared meats, all served by delightful Eastern European sausage maidens.

Just the day before yesterday I saw a heap of Bobak's frankfurters in the deli cooler at the Jewel on Roosevelt at Wabash. Presumably they're available at all the Jewel branches. Bobak products are also to be found at Caputo's in Elmwood Park (on Harlem). They're very good sausages.

A

PS: I should add that the South Loop Jewel seems to be following quickly in the footsteps of the Dominick's on Canal: they have both decided to try to emulate the shopping experience that erewhile was so treasured in East Berlin -- ever-shrinking stock of the good and the useful, though the sausages always abide.

Comrade Honecker, we who are about to shop salute you...

Hi,

Maybe not a Top Dog, maybe just a Pig on a Stick seen at Bobak's recently:

Their cooking instructions advised they could be grilled or deep fat fried in 4 minutes.

Regards,
