I noticed that San Soo Gab San has been nominated in the Korean BBQ category (not that there are really any defined categories). I like San Soo Gab San a lot. But even better, I like Hae Woon Dae.

I probably haven’t been to Hae Woon Dae quite as often as other LTHers, but it does have a long track record with people on the board. I don’t think I need to go into more detail than you’ll find in these links:

http://lthforum.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=888

http://www.lthforum.com/bb/viewtopic.ph ... 015270e404

http://www.lthforum.com/bb/viewtopic.ph ... 14f0ca9548

Now, throwing this out there as my nomination, I have to add two caveats:

I believe I’m the only member who’s been shot down twice on GNR nominations.

In a private e-mail, dicksond listed as one of the primary objectives of this round of GNR awards was to keep my record of consistently getting shot down in tact. (Of course, his tongue was firmly planted in his cheek as he typed it.)

So, with my deepest apologies to the management at Hai Woon Dae, I respectfully nominate them so that they, too can get shot down.

(not that I’m bitter)

Hae Woon Dae
6240 N California
Chicago, IL 60659

edited to note that I mis-spelled the name; at least as it's listed o ntheir menu

Tom,

If pressed for my favorite Korean BBQ my answer would be, and has been for years, Hai Woon Dae. Live coals, good quality meat, nice selection of panchan, and a good compliment of non BBQ dishes.

I happily second your nomination of Hai Woon Dae for an LTHForum GNR award.

Enjoy,
Gary

Gee, now you may have gone and broken your streak! Good nomination, I am almost sorry to say. :P Excellent place.

HI,

Hai Woon Dae is all about really good food. I heartily endorse this nomination.

nr706, some records are meant to be broken.

Regards,

Mike G said he needs a quote about Hai Woon Dae, so here's my pathetic attempt:

Live coals have never had it so good as being able to excite Hai Woon Dae's meat.

The perfect Korean barbecue in a nondescript north side strip mall. Real charcoal grills, big tables, tender marinated meats in many varieties, a glorious array of panchan to choose from and a free flow of good, inexpensive Soju - I always leave Hae Woon Dae well-fed, a bit rowdy, and happy with my lot in life.

I was introduced to Hae Woon Dae by some friends during grad school and have been going back ever since. Love this place. Great nomination.

Is Korean BBQ a great style of food, feeding our souls and our tummies even in these gray and cold days? Yup.

Is Hae Woon Dae an excellent exemplar of this cuisine by any measure? Double yup.

Another place I love and loved before it became a GNR and definitely since. I think this thread has gotten lost on page 2 of the renewals, so let me push it out there so others can show their continued love.

Dickson,

You just beat me to the punch.

Hae Woon Dae is, was and continues to be one of favorite spots in Chicago. Two thumbs up for GNR renewal!.

Enjoy,
Gary

I try to find an excuse to go to Hae Woon Dae every couple of months. It never fails to amaze me, with the panchan and the great meats. I took a large family group there last year - my 85 year old mother thought it was a bit weird (but still talks about it), and the teenagers in the group loved doing the grilling. Definite renewal.

Last time I tried to eat at Hae Woon Dae, they were closed but I won't hold that against them  (they now open around 4 pm and no longer seem to be open for lunch). Every meal I've had there has been tasty and satisfying. I can go there with my adventurous friends or my more conservative friends and both groups always seem to dig it. HWD is pretty much my favorite Korean in town and I heartily endorse its GNR renewal.

Hae Woon Dae is one of those places I go to every month or so - it's always great, but I have little to add about what's been posted. Definite DNR renewal.

I almost never take pics at Korean BBQ places, which is why I haven't posted about my regular experiences at HWD more often. But I really love it and think they are one of the top places in town doing what they do. Not only is the live-coal bbq exemplary but the panchan and other dishes always hit the spot. Service is friendly and the food is consistent, in my experience. I fully support renewal.

Echoing Ronnie, plus what I said upthread. Definitely friendly servers, despite a bit of language barrier.

My go-to for Korean BBQ, though an order of my wife's favorite Hai Woon Dae dish, steamed eggs, is a must order.

Hai Woon Dae, count me a fan!

Enjoy,
Gary

As posted on the SSGS thread, I love this place and go a few times every year. Still going strong, IMO, and a great place. Having finally tried SSGS, I am going to be torn next time I have a hankering for Korean BBQ, but not because there is anything less than excellent about Hai Woon Dae.

A group of us made it out to HWD last night. I've enjoyed it the couple times I'd been in the past, and last night was no different.

We started off with an order of the pork belly appetizer served with slices of radish and pickled vegetables. The pork belly was meaty with a rich, porky taste, and each slice featured a generous portion of pork fat to balance out the spicy, tangy pickles. It was a dish I'd never had before and it was one of the highlights of the meal. The other highlight was the perfectly marinated kalbi. All the meats were tender and delicious, but the kalbi stood out as having a memorably good balance of flavors, particularly when cooked over coals. Also, the raw beef with egg yolk and asian pear was a surprise hit.

It was a great meal overall with no real misses except for the strange appetizer salad of shredded iceberg lettuce topped with industrial salad dressing. Seemed out of place next to all the wonderfully prepared dishes. HWD is a definite GNR in my book!

HWD is a long time favorite and I would have joined you if not working. Last few times I've been with 7 or 8 people, the set dinner for 5 with an add on or two is more than enough, there were leftovers, and ranks high on the delicious to cost scale.

Hai Woon Dae, count me a fan!

And, yes to GNR renewal.

Thanks turkob for organizing the dinner and for re-introducing me to Hae Woon Dae. Thursday's meal was as good as any I've had there - probably even better - and definitely GNR worthy. I found myself full, and yet I couldn't bring myself to stop eating.
