Here's another long-gone Chicago food business. This photograph was taken recently from the sidewalk of a major street in the city; the smokestack is visible from car or bus.

Guess the original business, location and the food business currently in the building.

Here's a photograph of the main building, taken from the opposite side of the well-traveled commercial avenue. The building is occupied and functioning in spite of appearances (I did hide the company's name above the door). In fact this is probably their busiest season. Forget about Honey Boy for the time being if you like and simply identify the current food business.

That's it, Danish Maid, Chicago's whipped butter specialist.

Image

The company has been in Chicago (located elsewhere) since the 1950s when they pioneered the whipped butter cup. They make Clarendon Hills butter but are probably best known for the butter lambs you see in the stores before Easter.

Honey Boy was a local ice cream company that I wish I knew more about. Here's a little more of the old smokestack (that was going to be the next clue).

Image

Honey Boy Ice Cream was in business during the 1920s until it was bought out by Borden around 1930. I don't know if it was related to Honey Boy Ice Cream of Winnipeg, best known for issuing a set of now highly collectible baseball cards during the 1920s.

We also included a Danish Maid butter lamb at Easter dinner. It got decapitated accidentally during unpacking but its head reattached nicely.

That proved to be an appropriate prelude to the after-dinner spectacle: the beheading of the lamb cake.
