McDonald's Premium Roast Coffee

. . . is actually pretty decent. Not Intelligentsia level, but not the swill they used to serve. Much as I like Egg McMuffins, I hated having to stop one place for the sandwich and one place for the coffee.

McDonald's had people on some street corners in the Loop handing out coupons good for a free, small cup of the new coffee. I took two, but don't drink coffee. I'll trade the two for someone with two coupons for free Diet Pepsi! ;-)

I too received a free coupon to try the new coffee. I was unimpressed. I didn't find it terribly different from other average coffees. With a Dunkin Donuts right next to McDonald's on Chicago Avenue, the choice is clear to me.

I have recently enjoyed a $2 cafe latte from Argo Tea (Rush and Pearson) -- it's an early bird special. The tea place does a nice latte.

McDonald's is offering free coffee to its customers for a limited time as competition for the breakfast crowd intensifies.

The world's biggest hamburger chain announced Friday that participating U.S. locations will offer small cups of McCafe coffee at no charge during breakfast hours from March 31 through April 13.

I have always hated McD's coffee and will not drink the stuff. We were on a Canadian road trip and the only coffee available for miles was McD's. It was one of the better decorated-updated franchises and they promised me that the coffe would not disappoint. They were right-it was not the average cup of Ron. But I think the owner went off the reservation and supplied the store with premium java. Today's coffee is OK and better than the swill of long ago but I will not buy it except to stave off a caffeine withdrawl headache.

Actually, in Guatemala City (Guat being coffee country ... the Mickey D's café by the hotel had the best coffee in town. I don't understand why there were (are?) no local roasters ...

Friend of mine recently brought back a bag of Cafe Leon Rojo, "el cafe preferido por los guatemaltecos." Roasted at Tostaduria de Cafe Leon, S.A., est. 1938. So there's at least one.

Not all places that have coffee have strong coffee culture. I'd say very few if any really do. I've had bad coffee in Central America and East Africa where instant is often the standard. Vienna or Seattle, they ain't. It's not at all like wine where the locals enjoy the finished product in most cases. The beans are too valuable in these historically poor countries and the product wasn't ever typically finished (roasted) before export. The Guatemalans I know through my wife's family aren't big coffee drinkers, relative to, say, the Cubans in the family.

Hi- McDonald's has free coffee during the breakfast hours again. I think it runs through 9/28. You get one small coffee for free. If you want a refill it is $.19. Hope this helps, Nancy

Not only small (free), but medium ($.19), and large ($.36 - I think).

Not a bad deal at all for decent black coffee on a workday.
