We have a densely planted mixed garden this year of lettuces, herbs, tomatoes, zucchini and yellow squash, cucumbers, jalapenos, and japanese eggplant. The only thing getting attacked is the eggplant. Something bores in and munches away as soon as they appear, but we've never laid eyes on what it is.

Anyone know?

Hi- Are you sure it is not an animal eating at your eggplant? I don't know of any bugs that attack the eggplants themselves. Flea beetles make holes in the leaves. Hope this helps, Nancy

Some squirrels will attack eggplant but usually just mess up the ends (take a bite of one, decide they don't like it, maybe another one will be better, etc.). Generalization about squirrels' tastes is very risky as they do not live very long and can display odd tastes. Chipmunks are another possibility.

My squirrels have a taste for my best green tomatoes.
And I mean a taste of three or four before deciding they're not very good.

I have not noticed our eggplant being eaten but our tomatoes are and we can not figure out what it is. Its not an insect but an animal. Its like bites are taken out of it. I would bet on a raccoon and not squirrel. they do not eat the whole thing. I am tired of it and am going to put up some kind of fencing next year. It will have to be minimal because real fences are not allowed where I live but I need to keep the critters out.

Squirrels rarely eat a whole tomato. Sometimes they take a few bites out of one or more while leaving it (them) on the vine. Other times they get the tomato off the plant and go somewhere to eat their fill, which very rarely is more than half a medium tomato.

Hi- Deer could be eating the tomatoes. I've had them visit my community garden in Evanston.

It is very difficult to keep deer out of your garden. They can jump a six foot fence. The only sure fire way to keep deer out of your garden is with an electric fence, and that is not an option for most people. One year deer were eating my tomatoes, beans and peppers I still see deer, but they don't visit nearly as often as they used to.
