I had the family out for a Saturday drive when I ran across a place on Aptakisic road, just east of Buffalo Grove road, (small sign in the yard that states; "Fresh eggs").
Knocked on the farmhouse door and was met by young Tim Frillman who spent about 45 minutes showing us his flock of organically-raised chickens. He has two flocks. One in the larger coop, yard area numbered around 125 lively, healthy looking, brightly combed and happy hens who were busy clucking, scratching and dealing with the "pecking order", (at least until a red-tailed hawk happened to fly over which gave meaning to the old phrase; "running around like a chicken with its' head off". Luckily, Mr, (or Ms.) hawk flew on by and things went back to chicken normal.)
The second, smaller flock was mostly Aracuna(sp?) chickens about 4 months old. Tim expained that they hadn't started to lay yet, but that he expected eggs from them in about a month or so, (these are the hens that lay the "easter eggs" of blue, green and pink). In with the hens was one very noisy crowing rooster.
During the growing season Tim tills about 8 acres and grows heirloom produce, (check out his web-site at

Currently Tim says that the flock produces about 10 dozen eggs per day, but numbers should increase now that we're past the winter solstice. (I picked up his last dozen from this morning before I left. $5.00 dz Jumbo sized).
