GWiv,

Thanks for linking again to this classic post. I've read it probably 20 times, and I laugh every time I get to the "Ernest Borgnine-esque counterman... with sub-verbal, google-eyed flirtations."

My boyfriend and I visited the Bunny Hutch last summer for the first (and possibly last) time. We had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Ernest Borgnine behind the counter and taking in the periodesque decor. The hot dogs were bad. Just plain bad. They tasted as if they had been sitting in brackish water for several days. The most memorable part of our meal took place at the picnic tables outside, though. As we sat, taking bites of the nasty dogs and grimacing at one another, we heard the following conversation. Three teenagers were sitting behind us, eating in total silence for a good five minutes until one of them said, "You know the cheesy bratwursts?" Silence. Then, his companion ventured, "The ones with cheese in the middle?" The first teenager took a snort of his coke. "Yeah. They're good."

Well, now I guess we understand the pharmaceutical enhancement required to appreciate Bunny Hutch chow.

I hung out there a bit in high school (87-91), and a couple of my friends worked behind the counter. I never really liked the food, but HEY it was free.
The Bunny Hutch is truly one of the most depressing fast food places I can think of.

Sir Wiv,

Thanks again -not - for a painful reminder. The counterman of the wishfully-named Bunny Hutch certainly has devised a splendid way to ogle teenaged girls in summer wear, by installing a putt-putt golf course next to his hot dog stand.

I wonder what method he employs during his winters in Boca Raton?

Regards,

HV

I wasn't even going to mention this, but this quote compels me to relate an even more depressing fast food place I just visited. It's too bad, because they try hard, and even have some charm, but other circumstances doom them.

Saturday we went to a kite-flying event at the beach near Montrose, and afterwards wanted a quick bite, so I vaguely remembered a hot dog and burger stand around Montrose and Sheridan or Broadway or something. The place is called Jake's, and it has some nice painted graphics in the windows and so on, specials named for patrons, and so on.

As we sit there, though, two things become apparent. One is the very sad and derelict nature of the Uptown-area clientele; it's like eating in some combination of the cafeteria for a state rehab facility, and a rest home for indigent, forgotten old folks. Two is, a place that serves such a clientele is forced by necessity to cut both prices and cost to the minimum; my cheeseburger was probably the lowest-quality beef I have tasted in a non-Marxist economy. I don't fault Jake's for this, probably they're scraping by in this neighborhood just like their patrons, but I'd write a hefty check NOT to have to eat there again. (In fact, my visit to the Anna Held ice cream place was an effort to get the whole place off my tongue and out of my head.)

Sorry for making this thread even more depressing. Guess you could use a Anna Held banana split about now, too.

The quality of mercy is not strain'd;
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
'Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown;
His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
But mercy is above this sceptred sway,
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,
It is an attribute to God himself;
And earthly power doth then show likest God's
When mercy seasons justice.

That Willy knew a thing or two about fancy words.

Ramonita and I shared a lovely summer day of novelty golf, dropped a wad of quarters in the game room, and swang for the bleachers in the batting cage today. The only thing missing was an ice cream cone at Bunny Hutch (they usually don't screw that up). It's a hoot and hasn't changed much since I was a tad. Every year I expect it to be this place's last.

I talked to one of the owners named Craig who said he's been unable to find anyone to manage the food concessions(!) He related that the whole place is just a family run affair and that with deaths and the passage of time, they have their hands full just running what is open now. He hopes to lease it but hasn't really done anything in pursuit of that goal. Perhaps a good opportunity for someone, while it lasts.

Fortunately, the terms "borgnine" and "google-eyed" come up rarely in Chowhound posts, so it was pretty easy to find the new location of this classic thread, which I had not read previously.

Gary,

Many people associate Friday the 13th with bad news – but I think you have changed that once and for all with this heartening report.

Thanks,

Harry V.

Yup, the lights were on in there when I drove by on Tuesday.

I've been seeing late-70's-era commercials for "Novelty Games" ( I think ) which features the Bunny Hutch rather prominently. I'm on Comcast, if anyone can confirm that I'm not hallucinating these things.

Bunny Hutch is located on the grounds of Novelty Golf, so you are probably seeing correctly.

We drove by the Bunny Hutch last night (Friday) at around 10 and the lights were on, and people were sitting on the patio, eating. We were trying to make a movie, so we didn't stop to check it out--but it did appear that the Bunny Hutch was open!

Harry V's Worst Nightmare (08-07-07)
Image

I was driving by on my way to Home Depot and thought, "How bad could this really be?", so I stopped in to have a look around. Things started out on a good note when I saw a box of Vienna natural casing dogs being loaded into the steam table. I ordered a hot dog (hold the sauerkraut, which they consider a part of "everything"). 20 minutes later (I kid you not), I was presented with a room temperature dog on a stale bun.

I'm glad to report that even though Bunny Hutch has been closed for a couple of years, they are open again and haven't lost a step when it comes to consistency of their product.

The News Gets Worse!

Thank the heavens I didn't stop here last night! I was running errands that had me driving right by this place around 6pm, and I thought it looked rather interesting. I came pretty darn close to stopping in for dinner on the run. Opted for greener pastures when I remembered that I heard about char grilled steak tacos at El Asadero at 2200 W Montrose. DEE-lish.

Isn't the green vest on Mr. Bunny a new addition?

I propose a taste off between Bunny Hutch and Top Dog to determine the worst hot dog in Chicago.
