I'm not a huge eggnog fan, but would like to buy a good version (I really don't want to make it) for my guests this holiday.

Can anyone share their opinions, favorites, places to buy?

Anyone tried Oberweis' version?

There's a bit of Oberweis Eggnog discussion here

Allow me to reiterate: Oberweis eggnog is all an eggnog should be, and then some!

OK. What's the second best store bought eggnog?

Hi,

I don't like most commercial eggnogs because of the rum flavoring. I did recently sampled Land O'Lakes eggnog at Costco. While there was a rum presence it was not overwhelming. For my tastes, it was pretty good.

Regards,

I saw the stuff at Costco but was reluctant to buy it because I'm pretty sure it came in a 2 pack. I didn't want tons of eggnog around if I didn't like it. Deans
(full-fat) eggnog is very good. It is not rum-my, which I like becasue I add my own rum! It has a melted vanilla shake consistency which I like. It had a red container. The lighter versions are bad bad bad!!!

Hi,

You're right Costco does have the eggnog boxed in a two-half gallon containers.

Your description of the Dean's eggnog sounds precisely what I like: a vanilla flavored eggnog. It is a more neutral platform to add whatever liquor you want, if desired. I always thought Grand Marnier might be a good addition.

Regards,

That would almost make it like a dreamsicle! I usually just add a little of "The Captain"!

I believe the trib ran a taste test a few years ago and the CF Creamery won. Pretty sure it's available at Sunset, probably Treasure Island as well.

I'm an Oberweis gal myself.

I love Oberweis products but I have never tried the eggnog. I could live on their chocolate milk.

The Horizon Brand Organic Egg Nog is pretty decent. I am not really a fan of Horizon products, but that was the only organic egg nog i saw at whole foods today.

Some people love Bordens brand in the can, i am not a fan. I guess it is like certain types of ginger ale, you either love 'em or hate 'em.

Oberweis is excellent but has a melted ice cream consistentcy which is too much for me to drink on a regular basis.

I heart eggnog and all eggnog related products. But, with a husband with serious genetic cholesterol issues and trying to drop a few lbs myself, the full-fat stuff is just somewhat non-negotiable.

In a desperate moment, I purchased a container of the Silk Soy Nog, not expecting much and, I have to say, it is SO much better than I thought it would be. Does it have the rich mouthfeel of dairy based nog? Heck no. But with half the calories and a third of the fat of the regular stuff it really gets the job done. Nice and nutmeggy.

My sister and her husband are huge egg-nog fans...buying it pretty much as soon as it hits the market. They've tried a number of brands and have settled on Costco Kirkland as being their personal favorite. I've had it and it was tasty. Given I'm not a egg nog guru by any means, I'll trust their judgment and settle that it's at least a decent brand, despite being sold in two-packs.

We had friends back in Detroit who were famous for their eggnog. Turns out they would buy the best French vanilla ice cream they could find, let it melt, and add bourbon. Simple enough. But not, I suppose, if, like iblock9, you don't want a melted ice cream consistency.

My family loves the Oberweis eggnog and the girls beg me to buy it as soon as it hits the grocery shelves. You can feel your arteries start to snap shut as soon as it starts going down your throat. Deadly, but worth it.

I like C.F. Burger's eggnog. Mighty rich, but mighty tasty. (And if it's too thick for you, you can always thin it with a little bourbon -- and bourbon is the best booze for eggnog, I think.)

I took one for the team today and bought a half gallon of Oberweis nog and added some Maker's Mark. A little whipped cream and a grating of nutmeg (just for authenticity of course) and it was mighty good. LOL

I just got some egg nog a little while ago from the Delightful Pastries original location on Lawrence. It's awesome! It's very very rich and thick and full of flecks of vanilla bean. The daughter (not sure if that's Dobra or Stasia) said they get special vanilla beans from Tahiti. As the daughter said, add some rum or brandy and enjoy. Or even have some straight. It's a lot like a creme anglaise with a slight kick to it. Yum!

It was $10.99 plus tax for a quart container. And if you're thinking, why would I walk in and get only a quart of egg nog? Because I bought a bunch of their rainbow cookies, noticed it in the cooler, and was thinking about it on my way out and hearing the daughter talk about it, and went back for the egg nog. And now that I've tried it, I'm going back there this afternoon to pick up some more!

A follow-up comment. My companion here had a partial disagreement on my assessment, saying that it's delicious but the mild vanilla flavor might not be able to stand up well to added rum. And that might be true. This really is a lot like creme anglaise, with a strong vanilla flavor but without much of the tangy flavor characteristic of egg nog. So I'll present that caveat and leave it at that. If this sounds good for you, now you know where to get it.

Did I read that right? $10.99 for a quart of egg nog?

I am so happy with Oberweis' egg nog that I cannot imagine cheating with any other brand.

I recently went nuts on nog, so I'll share my findings:

Dean's Light: one of two favorites so far, other than the full-fat version.
Mystery brand found at Fresh Farms in a quart jug with a red cap: if anyone remembers the name of this brand, please let me know. This was a rich, not too sweet full-fat nog that I quite enjoyed.
Silk Nog: ridiculously sweet, but otherwise noggier than I thought it would be. With half the sugar, it would be pretty tasty.
Trader Joe's Light: not good. Very thin, as thin as Silk's, but with an odd bitter aftertaste. I may have to pour the rest out.
Trader Joe's Chocolate: couldn't resist, but I haven't cracked it open yet. I'll report back shortly.

In the past, I liked both the vanilla and original Southern Comfort (sans booze :?:) versions that were found in the refrigerated section of Jewel with the rest of the noggage. I didn't buy them this year. With the ones I did try this year, I think I'll be making homemade on Easter, and if it works, a bigger batch next winter. I'd also like to try a bottle of advocaat. By the way, where do you find CF Burger's?

I'm a big fan of Trader Joe's regular egg nog, it's really quite yummy. Their chocolate egg nog is also quite good, I especially like to use it in place of milk in my coffee (no really, try it before you call me crazy.)

I can't remember the brand name off the top of my head right now, but I've also found really good egg nog at Whole Foods in the past, like the Trader Joe's version it doesn't have any artificial stuff that can make it taste fakey like say the Deans version.

I wouldn't call you crazy, I recently put chocolate honey in my cup of free work coffee (which I'm told is Gloria Jean's...are they actually filtering it through jeans?) and it was surprisingly decent. Anything to cover up the taste of what Mr. Pie calls "cat litter coffee". I'll have to bring the quart to work and try it!

I'll have to try out the Whole Foods version, I love trying artificial-free foods.

Why is this stuff only available near Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas?

Next holiday season there should be an Eggnog day. A tasting of both store bought & homemade options.

I think the best I've ever had is Trader's Point Creamery's. Wow is all I can say. It's almost the consistency of a melted milkshake, not too sweet, and it's got those lovely spices.

Hi- While I went home to Michigan for Christmas, one of my sister's bought two different brands of eggnog at Meijer's. The Dean's low fat was okay, and I just finished the last of it a few days ago, but the C.F. Berger fat free eggnog was really good. I opened it up on Christmas Eve, and had a small glass of it, and was going to have another glass of it on Christmas Day, and to my dismay, it was all gone. It was only a quart container. Who in the Chicago area carries it? I have looked at both Dominick's and Jewel, and I have not had any luck. I would prefer a location near Evanston. I checked on their website, but it is under construction. I did not realize that the company is located in Detroit. Thanks, Nancy

Oberweis' nog is stellar, but of course pricey.
I agree on the Trader Joe's Light version, they were giving out samples just before xmas, and boy that aftertaste is nasty.

Hi- I was just in the Jewel at Plaza del Lago in Wilmette a few hours ago, and they had all their eggnog half price. They had lots of oberweis eggnog left, along with deans and Bordens. I was really tempted to get some oberweis, but the quart container was going to expire today, and I decided that I did not need a half gallon of the stuff. I know that there are a lot of oberweis fans here though. I ended up getting a quart of essential everyday chocolate mint eggnog. I'll let everybody know how it is. Hope this helps, Nancy

Make sure to read the ingredients on your egg nog. Most, including the Oberweis one I saw, have HFCS or HDCS solids in them. When I was looking at them only the ones with "organic" seemed to not have it.
