Raicilla, Mexican Moonshine

After a day in the jungle, I must have been dazed from one too many rides along the zipline, because when The Wife and I stopped at a little roadside Tequila place last week, I bought two bottles of Los Veranos Raicilla, the Mexican moonshine, a Mescal brother to Tequila but made with green rather than blue agave, and unbelievably raw, untamed, the stuff of nightmares under the volcano.



Tonight, with an appropriate movie on HBO, it seemed only right to crack a bottle and see if it was as bad as I thought I remembered.

It pretty much was.

With the Goodyear tire tang of a bottle-aged Gusano Rojo, and a vitriolic backnote hinting of turpentine, Isopropyl, and Witch Hazel, this is, indeed, a fine drink for when you’re lost in the rain in Juarez, which I’m not, so back in the liquor cabinet it goes, probably forever.

But I think it was worth it just for the great photo shot and how can you not be enticed by any spirit that's "100% NATURAL".

Please don't regift the second bottle at the LTH raffle next year . . .

Tequila- jalapeno, shrimp marinade? That's what I did with my last mexican vacation tequila. This bottle actually had our pictures on it from some tourist restaurant.

Knowing my current interest in tequila (and yes, I did bring home some bottles other than the raicilla), The Wife brought home this syrup from Whole Foods.



This stuff has a faint agave flavor and might be good as a honey-substitute.
