J. Geils Band, Anthology. Bob Stroud was "roots salutin' them the other day, and it got me itchin to listen to 'em.

A crucial step in my musical taste development was during the teens when I went from having Blue Oyster Cult as my favorite band to J. Geils.

thanks Ramon,

I saw the Dead 20 times, and the Jerry Garcia Band 3 times back in the day, some of the best music, and fun times of my life.

I also have seen Rat Dog, the Other Ones, and Phil & Friends a few times each. I used to have a few hundred hours of live Dead, JGB, and Legion of Mary, but misplaced it in a move.

Right now the disks I have been listening to are The North Mississippi Allstars @ Bonaroo, and Widespread Panic(I saw Panic last Saturday @ the Auditorium Theatre).

In the truck I listen to the above c.d's, or traffic for my 70 mile each way commute, I also listen to Rush Limbaugh @ lunchtime, and Roe Conn on the ride home. That is when the White Sox are not on the air.

Punk Rock Baby-lullaby versions of some 70's classics. Our 3 week old seems to really like it. Dad especially likes the version of "Ever Fallen in Love".

That video always brings a tear to my eye. Jerry looks genuinely weary. His voice is weak and he stumbles through the chorus' vocals. Still, when he solos, you can still sense the magic.

To bring it back to food -- I remember one time leaving a Dead show famished from frenzied hippy twirl dancing only to have some anonymous dude hand me a cream cheese, sprout, and tomato sandwich on a bagel. In those days I never would have considered eating such a sandwich -- well, maybe if you skipped the sprouts and put in a big fat slab of salami. It was purely delicious and an un-looked for blessing. Swept up in the crowd, I didn't even get a chance to say, "thank you."

Another time, I lost my friends and all my money for a twenty-four hour period at a set of shows that lasted three days. I ate, drank and partied on nothing but the kindness of strangers and their generosity was boundless.

Thank you to all who help others altruistically. It is a joy sharing the planet with you.

Hate to be a stickler but the last show was July 9, 1995 at Soldier Field. The 6/26/94 show was in Vegas. Wish I could say I was there but my last Dead show was at the Uptown sometime in 1981. Damn I'm getting old.

Listening right now to to the new album from Grazyna Auguscik with Paulinho Garcia, ANDANCA. Sounds beautiful.

I appreciate the correction. I knew that so ... I'm not sure why I thought that except that the song was played rarely. Damn conflated befuddled memories!

I was just thinking too, after posting, damn you must be crazy taking a six year old to a Dead show. Glad to know daughter, T, was actually seven. :D

"Ike Reilly "We Belong To The Staggering Evening"

Interesting. I've had that on my IPOD for several months now. Quite a few good songs on that compilation.

As a kid, I really loved punk rock. Thus, I recently developed a playlist that represents 25 years of punk that I have liked:

Neat Neat Neat - The Damned
New Rose The Damned
Damaged Goods - Gang of Four
Too Drunk to F*ck - Dead Kennedys
Time Bomb - Rancid
3rd Generation Nation - Dead Boys
Rise Above - Black Flag
Nervous Breakdown - Black Flag
Police Truck - Dead Kennedys
The Impression That I Get - Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Warriors Code - Dropkick Murphy's
Bittersweet - Satanic Surfers
Seeing Double at the Triple Rock - NOFX
Automatic - Less Than Jake
Sell Out - Reel Big Fish
Beer - Mustard Plug
Ring of Fire - Social Distortion
I Fought The Law - Dead Kennedys

Some Kind of Wonderful - Grand Funk Railroad
Black Water - The Doobies
Hot Dog - Led Zeppelin
Walk This Way Aerosmith
I Shot The Sheriff - Eric Clapton
Lowdown - Boz Scaggs
Rosalita - Bruce Springsteen
Poor Poor Pitiful Me - Warren Zevon
I Feel The Earth Move - Carol King
Before You Accuse Me - Delbert McClinton
Steamroller Blues - James Taylor
Fat Bottomed Girls - Queen
Tupelo Honey - Van Morrison
Saturday Night's Alright For Fightin' - Elton John
We're an American Band - Grand Funk Railroad
Shambala - Three Dog Night
Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
Dixie Chicken - Little Feat
So It Goes - Nick Lowe and His Cowboy Outfit
Cat Scratch Fever -Ted Nugent
Up on Cripple Creek - The Band

At the moment, the sound track from "The Man From Snow River." It was supposed to help me keep working, but given the fact that I'm posting here, I guess that didn't work. ;-)

My current obsession. A remarkable website and collection of pan-African (mostly central and west) obscura and ephemera.

Afro-beat #3 currently.

Highly recommend any of the Highlife collections. And unlike the ideal accompaniment to this music, free and legal.

I've been pretty hooked lately on a late nineties recording of Ein Heldenleben by Richard Strauss played by the CSO with Daniel Barenboim conducting.

I've been surprised lately, in general, hearing things that turn out to be Barenboim as soloist or as conductor that sound very different than the mental image I carry around. I'm liking him more and more all the time. (I'm late to the party because I just didn't get to go to concerts much during his tenure here.)
I tended to think of his sound as a bit heavy and a bit thickly textured, but I've heard any number of things that are fleet and flexible and transparent and lovely.

rarely if ever listen to tunes while I cook in my kitchen,

however when I am on my deck with the smoker(s), or grill going during one of my all afternoon Saturday smokes, I religiously listen to a show called "Saturday Blues" aired on WNIJ/WNIU(not sure how I found it since its aired on a NPR station). Nothing better than blues, bbq, sun, and beer.
