My favorite aunt wants to go out for crepes for her birthday lunch. Any suggestions? I saw the thread for the expensive crepe place in Lombard-- somewhere closer to the NW side of Chicago would be best. She had the crepes at Lutz last week and said that her other choice, "Crepe Crave", seems to have closed. Prince Creperie in Albany Park has also closed.

Backup plan, crepes chez moi:

Give Icosium Kafe on Clark St. a try. My one and only visit there (so far) was very good!

I have not been there yet, but Bistro Bordeaux's Pascal Berthoumieux recently opened Creperie Saint-Germain in the old Donatella space on Sherman in Evanston.

La Creperie
2845 North Clark Street
Chicago
773-528-9050

In the same location since 1972 (well, sort of) and hasn't changed much since then. I have liked it for 30 years!

A great suggestion, just note that they're closed on Mondays.

Is La Creperie related to the Crepe place that used to be at woodfield?
The name sounds familiar.

La Creperie has had only a single location, 2845 N Clark, since it opened 40 years ago this June. I believe the restaurant is still run by the founder, Germain Roignant, now with help from his son and family. You're probably thinking of the Woodfield location of Magic Pan. The first Chicago location opened on Walton over 40 years ago and the chain soon expanded to several suburban malls.

Thank you for correcting me. I though that the name was the same (I admit to being wrong), and always loved the pet store across the hall at Woodfield before it became a yuppie scum/ nothing a normal person would go to place. (years ago I could walk there from my house).

Yes La Creperie is the best and I have been going there since the 1970s. Very good. I love the salad with house dressing, ham and cheese crepe with mushrooms on top and we split a dessert crepe, banana strawberry. Yum.

Thank you everyone, the birthday Aunt very much enjoyed her trip to La Creperie. I had the creamed spinach crepe with mushrooms on top and she had some chicken crepe-- she said the sauce was delicious, with just a hint of horseradish. We both were disappointed in the mushrooms which, while fresh, should have been sauteed in butter or something-- they seemed to be blanched or something. The real standout at the meal was my daughter's Croque Monsieur, which was cheesy and perfectly browned, with delicious ham that had been cut into 1-inch squares to make the sandwich easier to eat.

Thank you again for the recommendations, we will try Creperie St. Germain next in our crepe quest!

Cheers, Jen

We've become regulars at La Creperie again in the last few years, after an interregnum that lasted over two decades! I actually can't think of one other restaurant that has changed as little as La Creperie has and stayed in business. The only other one that comes to mind is R.J. Grunt's, but even though Grunt's looks the same (and basically is the same), its menu has "evolved" in various ways since 1972. If there is one thing different about La Creperie's menu today from when we first started going there in 1972 (or one picture on the wall that's not exactly where it was), I can't discern it. We love this about the place.
