My anniversary is coming up and my better two thirds is really wanting something that I have not seen outside of Ky.
Onion strings (fried and baked?) in a bread pan to come out looking like a bread loaf - can be cut like a loaf, etc. My home attempts have been met with derision. Not quite like the awful Tony Roma's chain - these are more dense.

I would like to find a place closer than Versailles, Ky (pronounced Ver-Sales) to take her to. The closer to Milwaukee, the better.
This is what she is pining for. It does not have to be a fancy place, but a steak house would be better.

Any help appreciated. Please feel free to laugh.

There's a Hackney's in Lake Zurich. That's about all that comes to mind.

I think what you are looking for is called an onion loaf. I haven't seen one on a menu in a while.

spinynorman has it. The onion loaf is on the Hackney's menu.

Can't remember how much of a loaf it looks like.

The Hackney's onion loaf has shrunken over the years. If you want to approach a loaf shape, be sure and order the largest one they offer.

There was a day when I could make a serious dent in one of those. I tried to revisit my youth not long ago and found the experience disappointing. Just an oily lump of fried onions. Their housemade chips with hot sauce and blue cheese are better, but I'm moving way off topic here.

You can have Hackney's prepared the onion loaf where it is loosely gathered and fried. You may not get the tight cluster to pick apart, which almost always is undercooked in the middle. A massive loose cluster of more evenly fried onion rings is fun to play with, too.

Yeah, I always get the loaf "loose and crisp." And I prefer the location on Lake Ave in Glenview for the burger and the onion loaf over the original location on Harms. I also order the fries well done because they are pretty average to begin with, but at least they'll be hot and crispy too (and unlimited if you really want them).

Yeah, but Hackney's doesn't bake their loaf after they fry it, it's completely deep fried and comes out really fast.

My wife would love an onion loaf like the Hackney's she grew up with. I have lived within 20 miles of Versailles and worked there for seven years, Where on earth does one find one there?

Jake Melnick's Corner Tap used to have a terrific onion loaf, but their online menu doesn't show it. I suppose you can call to see if they still have it. They also have some pretty damn good wings.

Pewaukee, Wisconsin close enough? Jake's, which has been around forever, has exactly the onion strings you describe, they were a once or twice a year treat for this born and bred Milwaukeean.

Call first, its been a good ten years since I was last at Jake's.

I think that we will be trying Jakes.

The ones that the wife loved were in Lexington, KY (next to versailles) I think it was Columbia's.
There was also a steak house in Louisville close to where we used to work that had them as well - But I banned her from every suggesting the place when they took an Anniv. reservation for 7:PM and I forced her to walk out at 9 when we still were not seated. (she wanted to wait - I threw a fit in front of the manager and frog marched the wife out).
Midway had a place as well, but the name escapes me after all of these years.
