I had so much fun doing this last year that I have decided to resurrect the beach barbequing. They will be held in the same place (see map links below). Starting at around 11am and going all day. For those of you who want to stop by for a little bit but not stay all day, the main eating usually happens between 1pm and 3pm.

I will schedule them each on a Sunday. This year it will be difficult for me to maintain a routine of every other week, so I have set some exact dates to avoid any confusion.

And because every culture loves BBQ, I decided to give each day a theme, to be loosely adhered to, and open to suggestions/changes, of course. Sausages are always welcome. :)

May 20th - American
June 3rd - Southeast Asia (Vietnamese/Thai/Philippines etc.)
July 1st - Mexico/South America
July 15th - Korean
Aug 5th - Chinese
Aug 19th - Mediterranean
Sept 2nd - South-Asia (Indian/Pakastani etc)

PLEASE NOTE

We've updated the location. The new place has AMPLE parking in the morning and is a more secluded location, with a better view of the water. I think it's going to be our new permanent location. Below is an approximation on Google maps. When you're driving on simonds it's toward the lake, across from the blue playground. Coming from foot, we're right at the north point of the dog beach just when the sand ends.

http://m.google.com/u/m/dWp9ie

Please RSVP and include at least a rough idea of what you're planning to bring, drink, side, salad, main, etc.

I really just threw the themes in there. Here is a good reference if anyone wants to add or change one around. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_v ... f_barbecue

Hi all. We had a great first BBQ. Dansch brought some lamb ribs which dripped fat down onto my beef chuck. What a great way to keep it moist in the WSM.

Next BBQ will be this sunday, the 3rd. As with previous years, I'll be there with a few friends regardless of the RSVP count here, so please feel free to swing by, I'll be there!

Next week is going to be Southeast Asia themed. At the moment I'm really missing Malaysian food, so, I'm going to bring a propane burner and make a steamy cauldron of Penang Asam Laksa. I'll be leaving the smoker at home for this one, but will probably bring a regular weber grill. Hopefully people will bring lots of things wrapped in banana leaves to throw on the grill! :)

I'm going to try and make this. I don't cook a ton of SE Asian food, much less anything wrapped in banana leaves but I'll give it a shot. Open to suggestions, tips and tricks.

Man, I'm busy the next two dates, but I'm going to try to make it to the rest. Had a real blast at ones I attended last year. Is the smoker still going to be attending?

Alek, Glad to hear you're coming! I can tell you a few things others will be bringing.

I'm making laksa,
Teresa will probably be bringing something sweet
my sister will be bringing a thai flavored slaw
RAB and REB will be there, and are bringing some Indonesian dishes: grilled fish in banana leaf and a papaya salad.
I'll probably also bring a bunch of different fresh greens to eat along with everything.

As for suggestions, Bun Cha Hanoi would be fun since it's hard to find a good rendition of it in chicago. I have one of those metal grilling racks they use for it. Or Bo la Lot. Or some spicy cold malaysian salads. Or somethinng sticky rice wrapped up in leaves and grilled. A thai salad using grilled meat would be good too.

Suiname, Yes, the smoker will be at some of the future ones but probalby not all of them. It's not too hard to bring it so i someone needs a spot on it they can always ask. Hope to see you at some of these!

Wow, i had no idea the themed BBQ would be such an amazing success! Thanks to everyone who showed up, and bringing great food. The rest of June is so busy, so we will be skipping a BBQ putting the next one at July 1st.

Going to be an amazing lineup today. Carne en su jugo, huitlacoche quiche, grilled beefheart, guava+cheese tamales, smoked salmon/chard tacos, taquilla fruit salad, and at least 7 awesome salsa things... Parking be the dog beach is ample.

This weekend we'll be cooking Korean! It's going to be on this sunday, 7/15. It's going to be awesome! I have kimchi fermenting as I type this.

Please RSVP here if you want to come along with what you're planning on cooking. I promise to take pics this time. I have been busy cooking other times.

I plan to make Kimchi and a few banchan ahead of time. I'll also bring a soup. Soup at BBQ is fun. Anyone want to volunteer to make some korean BBQ? I'll bring the grill.

Hi all. Next bbq is on 8/5. It's been pretty quiet on the forum but the actual bbq's have had good attendance and been a lot of fun! The korean bbq was great! Korean people dont' know what they're missing out on by not smoking the brisket!

Anyhow, next bbq will be Chinese. I think i'm going to focus on szechuan, but not sure. Some other ideas being tossed around involved some smoked duck.

Agreed! Korean-seasoned, smoked brisket ssam is a real winner:

It's also worth noting that Laikom made 8 different kinds of homemade kimchi!

Hi,

I love to go, though I will be at the Wisconsin State Fair checking out heirloom recipes.

Have fun!

Regards,

Hi, yes, just updated the date on the title. Sorry, I've been a bit behind on keeping up with the posts here. The "american" theme was, i guess, just a placeholder in case we wanted to come up with another theme after doing a few. There was some talk of doing Italian, but I'm still not sure I'm sold on that idea yet. Do you have any ideas you'd like to go with? Another option is to move the india/pak up to this week then maybe do a best-of for the final one.

I'm open to suggestions, or check back to see when we update.

See you sunday!

After much deliberation with a few people, I've decided to go with a general Mediterranean theme. So that would include Italy, France, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Morocco. I know, it's pretty much open ended, but should be fun!

Gonna do my best to get there during the little one's naptime, typically somewhere between 12 and 2. Probably not much time to cook, so will bring some kind of seasonal antipasto. Prosciutto with melon, anchovy stuffed eggplant, grilled bread with garlic and oil. Something like that.

If you change your mind about bringing her, I happily volunteer to help babysit!! I'm sure she'd have plenty of entertainment :D

I have a dinner date with grandma later this evening but i'll try to make it during the lunch portion. Leaning towards some type of grilled lamb but not set.

EDIT: air show will be going on just south so we may have some added entertainment.

I need to use some okra from my garden so definitely going to do something with that--especially given how much ya'll raved about slimy stuff last weekend! From a bit of research, I've found that there are a number of popular southern and eastern med preparations--some as simple as soaking in salt and vinegar for an hour and then roasting which I should be able to do on the grill, right? I have a lot of shishito peppers too so maybe blister 'em up with the okra--may be straying from the med theme a bit but surely they have something resembling shishito peppers in the Mediterranean, right?

I'm thinking I'd also love to grill some flatbread/pizza with sliced tomatoes and onions atop an eggplant spread with feta and fresh oregano.

Is there grill capacity or do I need to bring one?

This will do a great job of cleaning out my fridge!!!
