This year my husband and I took a small-group tour of Yunnan, China organized by Globetrotting Gourmet. The company consists of two Aussies, Robert Carmack, an American-born chef, cookbook author and food stylist, and Morrison Polkinghorne, textile artist, entrepreneur and expert at generating fun and eliminating obstacles. Morrison is the only person I've ever met who was born in Tasmania. (And, yes, he once saw a Tasmanian devil.) My husband and I learned about the Yunnan tour from LTH contributor GAF, who took the tour in 2011 and recommended it. We were amazed at the breadth and depth of the tour, and particularly appreciated Robert's attention to helping us investigate ingredients and art objects of interest to us. The tour focused on markets and arranging for us to interact with local chefs, artisans and merchants. We also had wonderful meals in private homes. Best of all, there was no "dumbing down" of the experience, and none of the issues that arise with a large group, in which it can be difficult to pursue one's individual interests. We had a real culinary adventure, LTH-style. The trip was also an excellent value, especially considering the high comfort level of the hotels we stayed in.
