Yeah, with beers it's difficult, just because starting gravities are all over the map. For example, some of the sweetest beers (to my tastes at least) are fairly high ABV beers, like Baltic Porters, for instance. And some of those Imperial IPAS, while bitter, also can be on the syrupy sweet side. With wine, as you say, you have a much narrower range of starting gravities that make ABV a much better indicator of residual sugar.

I tasted a friend's Bell's Oberon the other day and it was delicious. Like a mimosa made with beer.

See? You do like beer! Oberon, as I said above, is my favorite example of the American wheat style. Gumballhead (by Three Floyd's) is also highly praised (both ratebeer.com and beeradvocate.com rate it the best in the wheat beer category, although I find that a bit out-of-style, personally, being a bit hoppy for an American wheat ale (like pretty much everything they make.) It's not obnoxiously hop-heavy; it's just heavier on the nose than I expect for the style. That said, it's also really tasty and worth a quaff.

Had a Revolution Antihero the other day. Vile, vile stuff. It was so bitter I had to force myself to get to the halfway point.

Clearly you're not a hophead. Try a Scotch Ale.

To anyone new to beers, I would highly recommend going to the GNR Bad Apple, sit at the bar and order one of their awesome burgers, then talk to the bar tender about what you do or don't like about the taste of beer.

They are very knowledgeable and would be more than happy to give you sample tastes of any of their 30 taps, and/or put together a flight. Tastes are usually free for the cheaper beers or $1 for 1oz for the more expensive ones. The $1/1oz is listed on the menu. If it doesn't say $1/1oz, I believe they'll just give you a taste free. Weekends can get pretty busy at peak times, so I'd recommend picking a weekday either a little before or after dinner hours and you'll get a lot of attention from the staff.

Best of luck exploring your new interest in beer!
