Yesterday I made a second trip to Capannari's in Mount Prospect and had the Frango cone...dark chocolate mint with little bits of Frango mint in it. Fantastic!

    HI,

    A buyer beware moment ...

When I first moved to Highland Park, I recall buying an ice cream cone for 19 cents.

A few years later, I read a Wall Street Journal article about a disgraced executive. The once powerful now owned a Baskin Robbins ice cream store. I remembered vividly an example of how his life had changed: his greatest challenge was serving a precise portion of ice cream to avoid giving away product for free.

This evening I stopped by Baskin Robbins for a single scoop of ice cream for $2.39. My friend ordered hers in a cup and I had a sugar cone. She paid $2.39 plus tax. I paid $2.39 and 50 cents for the sugar cone plus tax. I pointed out the signage stated cone or cup for $2.39. The clerk said they expected new signage soon but the computer was already updated. Nothing was disclosed about this sugar cone upcharge until after I was handed my cone and I read the bill.

I don't care for undisclosed information.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

This has become a week of ice cream gluttony.
Sunday was a hot fudge sundae at Sander's, Niles. Monday - banana peanut butter sundae at Zanzibar. Tuesday - Oreo shake at BopNGrill. Wednesday - hot pineapple sundae at Jack's, Skokie. Thursday - Ben & Jerry's Clusterfluff.

Today I took a trip to Hartigan's and had Snowball ice cream - white chocolate pistachio - blended into a malt (very tasty and thick). On the way out I saw a sign advertising the Terry's Bet U Can't challenge - 5 scoops of ice cream, 3 toppings, whipped cream and nuts with two brownies that needs to be eaten in 20 minutes in order to win a coupon for a free 2-scoop sundae. I think I'll return.

That's when I realized, hey, I haven't had butterscotch in a really long time. Does Margie's make their own? That's my next stop. But I'd like to hear about other folks' favorite places for butterscotch.

I don't really know anything about butterscotch, but my table was comped a fantastic butterscotch pudding at Balsan last Saturday. It came with little sablé-like cookies. If you can get downtown, and the pudding is still on the menu, it might be worth stopping in and having dessert at the bar.

I used to be a big fan of Thrifty's ice cream, a huge scoop of very good vanilla for 25 cents. They're all gone now, but I think fondly back to the halcyon days of the 80s.

My friend is having surgery and she said that she could use a visit when she's back home, and in order to feel better, she could use some chocolate cream pie and ice cream (you see why we're friends). She thought either vanilla bean or mint chocolate chip, and being such a dandy gal I figured I'd get a pint of each. Naturally the pie is coming from Hoosier Mama. What ice creamery, preferably near HMPC, do you recommend for both ice cream flavors?

I've been on an ice cream kick lately. I'm heading to Dirk's for some smoked fish. I have four options ready to go but I'm always up for suggestions. Other than Margie's, are there any old-fashioned fountains around there (2070 Clyborn)?

The good in new ice cream: JP Graziano's. OK, it's technically gelato. It's made by ex-Baume and Brix chef Ben Roche and there are some incredible creamy delicious flavors made with really high quality ingredients. The olive oil is my favorite, but the saffron, pistachio, and risotto are also stand-outs. The tomato one is a novelty gelato done really well. Well worth the price.

The bad: Unfortunately Cone Gourmet Ice Cream doesn't live up to its whimsical Irish concept or name. The ice cream is not made in house or in small enough batches, so a lot of it is freezer-burned and overly sweet. The funniest thing was the loud Irish folk music they were playing. One of the staff was wearing headphones to avoid listening to it...

Agree on Cone - went there the opening Sunday and my pistachio cone was freezer-burned and pricey. I thought they might be working out some opening kinks, but I guess not...

JP Graziano's is on the list...

The "housemade" pistachio ice cream was the most intensely flavored I've had--closest to the Platonic Ideal of pistachio ice cream--of any ice cream or gelato of that flavor that I've tasted outside of Firenza.

I saw this thread pop up to the top and didn't realize LTH had an ice cream thread. I noticed that in 2006 riddlemay gave credit to Sola. I just wanted put in my 2¢ that although Sola has changed a lot since then, the ice cream really is some of the best, if not the best I've ever had. They do the classic flavors really well, but they also use a lot of interesting ingredients very well. Even the flavors that seemed over the top didn't really come off that way. Two I remember being great were the szechuan peppercorn, and the butterscotch-miso, I think they replaced the butterscotch-miso with vanilla miso which is also excellent. It is ice cream I get excited about even though I'm not big into sweets. I also think Sola is underrated, in the 4 times I've eaten there I've really enjoyed everything.

Best ice creamy things I've had lately: gelato from Black Dog (a variety of flavors, with a goat cheese walnut probably being my favorite...no, it was the Oreo Mint) and goat-milk gelato from Prairie Fruit Farms (thai basil).

Still have Zarlengo's in Chicago Heights as one of the top three on my list. Between all the italian ice and the gelato flavors, it's hard to choose. I've found that even if I order a small, I still get to choose two different flavors. My husband usually opts for a cooler, which means scoops of ice or gelato, mixed in with their soft-serve ice cream. It's just too much for me, but he loves it.

Based on my understanding, they will be serving Zarlengo's in the Baker & Nosh expansion, not that there will be a Zarlengo's.

Baker & Nosh wrote:Finally! As some of you already know, we have been planning an expansion of our store. This has been in the works since late spring, but unfortunately has taken much longer than anticipated.
We are now ready to begin work and hope to have this open by the end of September. One of our new offerings that we are most excited about is Zarlengo's Gelato!
We have tried many different companies and found Zarlengo's quality to be second to none. This combined with the fact that they are a local, family-owned business just made it a perfect fit.
