I never knew former Ald. Levar tried to talk Culver's into considering a location there, interesting to learn all these years later! Anyway, I've read Culver's is supposed to open a location on Irving Park west of Cicero next to the former LaSalle Bank Theater, but I've heard no word when that'll open. Nor the proposed locations in Bronzeville, or the location in Wrigleyville on the west side of Clark Street where a Chase Bank branch once was.

I've also heard talk of a Culver's potentially coming to Lincoln & Peterson in the vacant lot where the shopping center that burned down used to be. For sure (ground is already broken) they are coming to Skokie Blvd behind the Jewel located across from Portillo's and the car wash.

Get ready, burger fanatics: Culver's is coming. The Wisconsin-based franchise known for its frozen custard and ButterBurgers is opening its first locations in Chicago, and one is planned for a plot of land near Midway International Airport .

Culver's has been in the Chicago area for a while now. I'm not sure how long the one on Dempster in Morton Grove has been there, but I'm guessing a year or two. They just haven't yet opened one within the city limits.

Quite a few, actually. There's one on Mannheim just south of Touhy (what was originally Crispy Creme), one on Dempster in the SE corner of Mt Prospect, and another at the NE corner on NW Highway. Further out, I know there's one on Rand in Palatine just north of Dundee, and another just north of Rt 22. These have all been around for several years.

The other day I visited the Culver's in Rosemont. Only upon biting into my burger did I realize Culver's smashes their burgers. There was a distinct charred flavor on the edges and I could see some lacy edges. It was a really good fast food burger. And yes, cheese curds and friendly service too. I was a happy guy.

I loooove the green beans. I know it's weird. Can't help it. And the pot roast sandwich is really good.

I rode home from a show with a trumpet player whose son is a manager at a Culver's in the north suburbs. Says that the pot roast is made fresh every day.

No wonder the sandwich is good...

I've never actually tried the sandwich, but the pot roast dinner is my usual order at Culver's. My only complaint is that it can be a little salty. But I've never been disappointed.

Kyle Cherek, the host of Wisconsin Foodie http://wisconsinfoodie.com/ is on a recent Culver's ad stating how good the cheese & the particular burger featured are at Culver's. Have to say, makes me want to go try it.

I like Culver's (I prefer Steak N Shake's burger even though they are very similar). I always get my fries extra crispy. Curds hit the spot when you want them, but they are the frozen type, not the lightly breaded ones you might find. I think they ditched their fried chicken dinners (they weren't anything special), but their chicken tenders are actually pretty good. The custard - when done properly - is very good.

We stop at Culver's all the time on our frequent road trips to Wisconsin. Never tried the pot roast, but will now after reading this thread. My wife says their chicken tenders are the best you can get at a fast food place. Burgers are always good. I've had the Rueben which is surprisingly solid as well.

Only disappointment are their fries which I would put in the inedible category alongside Burger King.

At one time, Culver's had decent (albeit) frozen foodservice fries and then they started serving this Burger-Kingy coated crap. If my faulty memory is correct, this changeover happened around 5 years ago...

Is it possible they're serving different fries at different locations? I've never had any kind of coated fries at the one in Rosemont; always an institutional crinkle cut version.

It's not a flavor based coating, it's more of a starchy type additive to add faux crispness. Old school Culver's fries did not exhibit this, newer patrons would not even know what I'm talking about...

I got so excited for the pot roast sandwich that I had it today. Yep, delicious. Meaty, juicy and surprisingly good. They offer sauce with it and I thought one packet of horseradish made for a perfect pairing. I'm also amazed just how friendly the service is. I'm not sure if this is the case at each location, but they could teach most restaurants about good service.

The service has been that way at every Culver's I've been to. That doesn't mean it's like that everywhere, but all signs point that way.

They are a very well managed company. The other Wisconsin based company that is as well managed is Kwik Trip. Very good concept and very successful. They have some Portillo's up here in the Milwaukee area now and they also seem to be fairly well managed in my view from a couple of visits.

Puckjam, could you elaborate just a little on what makes Kwik Trip unusual? (I know this is a Culver's thread; just hoping my curiosity can be sated with one little side-trip that won't become a hijack.) We were in a Kwik Trip in Chetek WI a couple summers ago and I thought it was very pleasant as gas/convenience-store places go, but I didn't see anything fundamentally different from a million other such places, just that it was perceptibly "nicer." (But I chalked that up to the small town setting.) I'd love to know what they're doing to achieve that niceness system-wide, if it can be summarized quickly.

In a nutshell, they are family owned and treat their employees very well. Thus, the customer service is extremely good at all locations. The cleanliness is very evident on your visits. They have their own brands of milk, chips, bread, etc...., where they are involved in QC. The coffee is very good and they always have fresh fruit and vegetables available. They are clever also and usually have onions, potatoes, milk, and banana's at very reasonable prices (loss leaders type prices). At the end of the day, they will give you a consistent and friendly product. The kind that makes you return.
