I just got a notice from Binny's that "Da Coach" will be visiting their Highland Park store for the kick-off of his new line of wines. Funny, but Mike Ditka is just not a name that inspires in me the desire to run out and buy wine. Is this something he serves at his restaurant and it's now going retail?

I think it's a brand new thing, not a restaurant spinoff. The amount of celebrity-labeled wines has exploded of the past couple years. Some celebs are actually running vineyards (Lorraine Bracco comes to mind) while many others are just having their name put on someone else's product, (Mick Fleetwood comes to mind).

I can just see the Ditka tasting notes right now: A soft bouquet of cigar ash with an assertive finish of SCREAMING AND YELLING IN YOUR FACE!

Best,
Michael

Is it beer-flavored? Can't really envision the Soldier Field crowd moving over to wines as their beverage of choice during a Bears game. Imagine them toasting a touchdown instead of spilling beer.

Actually, when I saw the subject line of Da Coach, I assumed it must be a new line of beers, or maybe frosty malted beverages. Seeing the tousle-haired Ditka caricature stamped in gold beneath an elegant MD on the dark lable made it clear, however, that they are least trying to look like real wine.

For anyone who's interested, the introductory event/wine tasting is Wednesday, Nov. 15 6-7:30pm at Binny's in Highland Park, 153 Skokie Valley Highway. For info, 847-831-5400.

Let me know what it's like.

If they are hoping to sell wine to the Bears skybox season-ticket-holding-Mogan David-drinking set, they might have uncovered the right spokesperson. Oh, MD doesn't stand for Mogan David? Don't be so sure.

Apparently, Da Coach has been an oenophile for some time. Here is alink to a story published in last week's Sun-Times, where MD recounts getting a DUI during the '85 superbowl season after drinking copious quantities of wine with Jerry Vanisi on a flight from California.

In keeping with his Grabowski spirit, I'd really like to think it's just Thunderbird with a reworked label.

Fifty, twice.[/url]

I can't find the full version of the video (it got taken down from pretty much every site that had it), but I can't think of Ditka without thinking of The Grabowski Shuffle (youtube)

The song starts about 15 seconds in.

Wow -- is that strange. What does it mean?

It means Mike Ditka wanted to capitalize on the success of the superbowl shuffle, and that jackhammer george is never a fool when he's using HIS tool.

It's one of my favorite things ever.

If that porn star in New York can pick out a wine scored highly by Robert Parker, da coach should be ok.

Here's what the Sun Times had to say abut the roll-out of Mike's wines:

I have finally found the perfect thing to drink while wearing my James Brown cologne.

Amid slumping sales over the last year, Chicago football legend Mike Ditka is relaunching his line of wines.
The new Mike Ditka Wines, which will replace the spirits the former Bears coach has lent his name to since 2006, will include eight labels, each a tribute to an aspect of his famed career.
There's "The Player" (merlot and pinot grigio), "The Coach" (cabernet sauvignon and sauvignon blanc), "The Hall of Famer" (pinot noir and chardonnay), "The Icon" (cabernet sauvignon) and "The Champion" (red wine blend).
After six years in the portfolio of California-based Mendocino Wine Company, Mr. Ditka has now teamed up with Lake Bluff-based Terlato Wines International to develop a totally new wine and help improve its distribution, which hasn't gone far beyond his restaurants and a handful of local beverage depots.
