You can get a fish sandwich there anytime, but I think the Walleye season is limited to Lent. OTOH, chicagostyledog frequents Culver's up in Wisconsin's Northwoods where they may serve them more often, or even year round.

I wonder how much of Culver's appeal is from their custard on this survey? That being said I think overall their menu is better than most fast food chains. I think Steak N Shake needs a reboot and ditch the servers. Go the route Culver's and Freddy's have which seems to be far more popular. They need a makeover as well. The subway tile looked nice and old fashioned when they built the Randhurst store, now it looks dingy. And the last time we were in there the service was so bad it was indistinguishable from getting it dropped off at Culver's, except slower.

We stopped at the Culver's in Michigan City near I-94 on our way back from Michigan today and our burgers were all prepared "Schoops/region-style" and near flattened with a nice crust on both sides. I don't recall ever experiencing that before at a Culver's but I was not disappointed.

Bonus theater, mentally unbalanced person in the dining room. 6'4 talking to himself, no big deal, bouncing around the dining room wildly gesturing, yelling, frantic, disconcerting to say the least. Morton Grove police were called, they were incredibly gentle with him. Even offered to buy him lunch, give him a ride, he settled down. Then acted out once again. Not sure what happened, I left as the second act began. I was impressed by the professionalism of the Morton Grove Police Department.

The Culver's at the Montrose Brown Line stop is definitely under construction and being fitted out. Also, it is now officially listed as "opening soon" on the Culver's website. It's going to be interesting to see how a Culver's survives in a lower density urban area without a drive-thru or lots of parking (unless it has those things, but it's not obvious).

I'm no culver's accountant, but I think they'll do fine given the amount of foot traffic and families in the neighborhood. I live about 5 blocks away and have mixed feelings. Culvers is hands down my favorite fast food chain, but I wonder if it can hold that title once it becomes so accessible. Right now I probably eat it once a month...and it's a special treat. Not sure if that proximity might take the shine off.

What will be interesting to see is how Margie's does after Culvers opens. It's gonna be a Custard v. Old School Sunday war. Hoping that it's a symbiotic relationship and they can feed off each other.

Uh, what? There's like 25,000 people per square mile around there and a built-in source of foot traffic literally right next to it. If there's a place that absolutely doesn't need a drive-in, that's it right there.

We always want what we can't have, and lose interest once it's readily available.

With me it's more a function of aging. I can no longer do calorie-intensive meals without consequences if I want to maintain my weight. So the fast food visits are far less frequent or limited to road trips, where all bets are off.

The nearest Culver's is another 5-10 minutes away, we don't go often, but if we're going to stop for fast food on the road, it's almost always our choice if it's there.

Steak and Shakes are very much hit or miss in my experience. We have season passes to Six Flags, and since I'm pretty frugal (as my sons are well aware), we often hit up the Gurnee S&S on the way home instead of eating park food, since it's about 30 seconds from the park entrance.

Now that's a pretty great one. I like the fast food/sit-down hybrid thing; it always seems to have a decent crowd but we've never had to wait for a table; and it's always quick and good. That said, no one will ever convince me that shoestring fries are in anyway preferable.

I'll still eat 'em; but I don't understand why they exist. Standard, crinkle, steak, curly, hand cut...they're all superior to the shoestring (And none of it is as good as Culvers).

Has anyone been to the Montrose/Ravenswood location since it allegedly opened yesterday? I don't have a car and not sure I want to traipse all the way over there to see they aren't open.

Now that you mention it, I think Margie's is more vulnerable than Culver's, now that Culver's has opened. I say this as an unabashed fan of Margie's. But Culver's will be quicker and easier for lots of families in the neighborhood.

I am one of the lucky few to have tried the Curder Burger (I keep thinking there is a “Rural Juror” tie in here but can’t think of it). The Curder Burger was pretty good but honesty all the cheese buried the burger flavor. Glad I tried it just so I can say I did but probably wouldn’t order it again.

I got there too late on Friday, "settled" for what I consider the best fast food burger around, the Mushroom Swiss Butterburger, and an order of curds.
