The abundance of the Wicker/West Town
new Asian scene continues to blossom!
Last year when I pulled up to 1547 N Ashland to find that Phodega had relocated to Division Street, I saw signs in the window promoting the next tenant of the space,
Sando Street. For whatever reason I never made it in there until a few months ago and was very pleasantly surprised.
The vibe is adjacent to Phodega with a 90s hiphop soundtrack and a tight menu of new school Asian street food. I've been twice now and haven't gravitated away from their signature Tonkatsu sando. This neatly wrapped package conceals a major flavor bomb — perfectly seasoned crunchy tonkatsu patties, tonkatsu sauce, Kewpie, and cabbage sheathed in pillowy shokupan. And those house-fried Japanese sweet potato chips do not suck at all.
Two notes about this sando: 1. On my first visit I ordered online but got there like 45 minutes late. The cutlets had plenty of crunch and it was eminently enjoyable at room temp. 2. It may look like a tight package (and its structural integrity does hold) but it's a pretty monster lunch, there's two whole cutlets in that thing.
So thrilled to have this place in my work day lunch rotation!
