Agreed. We've been on a tough run this year in the Lincoln Square/North Center area. Along with Sticky Rice and the wonderful 016 Restaurant mentioned recently upthread, Rainbow Thai as we knew it is gone, Spoon Thai (though a shell of its former self) is gone, Tom Lee Chinese (best cheap guilty pleasure in the area and my personal favorite for comfort food) is gone, and Dimo's Cafe closes Saturday (I thought it was really good). Luella's Southern Kitchen has also been promising for a while to close this month -- not sure about the current status. And while I wasn't a huge Cafe Selmarie fan, that place was a real neighborhood institution.

Thankfully the area's still pretty blessed from a culinary standpoint but our family has really been feeling the loss of these reliable local standbys.

Hate to add to the list, but Due Lire closed at the end of September. It was on their social media. Dimo's Café last day was October 12.

A respected French chef is going casual and joining with longtime members of his team to open a counter-service Mexican restaurant in the northern suburbs. Fondita Miguel is the latest project from Michael Lachowicz of the George Trois Group, located a mile up Green Bay Road from his brasserie Aboyer. A joint venture with his business partners Miguel Escobar and Sergio Angel, it will serve tacos, tortas, and burritos at 544 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka.

Denny's Says it Expects to Close 150 Locations by the End of 2025

Denny’s says it’s closing 150 of its lowest-performing restaurants in an effort to turn around the brand’s flagging sales.

About half of the closures will happen this year and the rest in 2025, the company said during a meeting with investors Tuesday. The locations weren’t revealed, but the restaurants represent around 10% of Denny’s total.

Stephen Dunn, Denny’s executive vice president and chief global development officer, said in some cases, the restaurants are no longer in good locations.

“Some of these restaurants can be very old,” Dunn said during the investor meeting. “You think of a 70-year-old plus brand. We have a lot of restaurants that have been out there for a very long time.”

Others saw traffic shifts during the pandemic that have yet to reverse, he said.

On Tuesday, Denny's reported its fifth straight quarter of year-over-year declines in same-store sales, which are sales at locations open at least a year.

Jimmy Bannos Jr.’s last day at the Purple Pig ended with little fanfare as the chef sold his stake in the Loop restaurant. As of Wednesday, October 23, Bannos Jr. is no longer involved in the restaurant he co-founded 15 years ago.

I have not been to Dennys in ~ 40 years. Used to go to a Denny's after an evening of drinking. Tavern across from Denny's and at that time of morning only placed open. My typical order was 2 Gland Slams with large chocolate milk. At that point in my life, that cured all evils!! Of course the waitress always thought I was ordering for the table and whomever I was with would also order 2 Grand Slams.

Almost 15 years ago, we threw open the doors of our Milwaukee Avenue brewpub and launched Revolution Brewing to the world. The brewpub is where the first Revolution beers were served and where we first brewed beers like Anti-Hero IPA which would change the shape of craft beer in Chicagoland.
