Still had it last night. Fruit unfortunately slightly under-ripe in mine. But still a Chicago classic.

Anyone know if Mario's is open yet? Going to Book of Mormon tonight and my Boston-based daughter would love a little après-theater treat.

    Hi,

May 1st is the usual official opening, though they have been known to open the night before. Frankly, I would do a drive by because they tend to open when they are ready.

    Hi,

Finally stopped by for my first visit of the season. Mango was ordered, devoured and wishing for more.

Mango is the tropic's peach with a lovely sweet softness like a very ripe peach. It was also very, very pretty in the serving cup. If I could drive and take pictures with any expectations of safety, there would be a picture posted now.

    If you like mango, go!

Unfortunately, I missed out on the mango this afternoon. Ran into Alan Lake and Teresa, and got the scoop from Alan. The mango is very labor intensive to make with peeling and cutting, so hard to keep in stock.

Peach has to be just as difficult to produce. Watermelon seems to me to be one of the easier flavors to make.

    Cantaloupe/lemon combo was just fine.
If you aren't tasting, you aren't cooking.

    Hi,

Yesterday around 2:00 pm, I was lucky to get the mango.

I had a friend do the running due to lack of parking. Our order in preference was:
    - Mango
    - Tutti Fruitti
    - Lemon

I can understand why mango is expensive to make. It just makes me appreciate it more when I do get any. I'm hoping there will be some on Tuesday night.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Have enjoyed the mango about 3 times, the past couple of weeks... excellent new flavor. Have really wanted to try the pomegranate - but the last 2 trips theyve been out of it both times! (The girl at the counter advised a trip "before 5pm" in the future - both days I was there in the late evening, and it had run out by 5-ish...maybe this weekend!)

I was not wowed by the mango, found the fruit a bit bland, perhaps not ripe enough. The pomegranate was delicious, though my favorites are still the melons - watermelon or canteloupe, followed by plain lemon. Another place I find every excuse to visit, though when I stopped on a Sunday on my way to serving penance at US Cellular, I was surprised to discover Al's is closed on Sunday. So I had to make do with a large pomegranate for lunch. I did pick up a modified depression dog closer to the park for dessert.

I think I need about 5 visits to Marios before summer starts.

    Hi,

My very first mango at Mario's was heavenly. The next one was not as vividly flavored with a substantial color shift. I believe they used a different variety, which may have been not as strongly flavored. If you happened to have what I had on my second serving of mango, I understand your lack of enthusiasm.

While I adore peach, not every time is it perfect. Sometimes I encounter a less than ripe peach. Another time it is ripe and full flavored.

What I consistently enjoy is tutti fruiti. I have begun to order medium, because the fruit sometimes squeezes out the lemonade.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Yes, the last date the stand is open is a Sunday in mid-September which, as Alan (Jazzfood) posted above, was September 15 this year.

The marathon course does pass by Mario's location, though there has been no conflict since the marathon is in October.

There's a sentimental reason for the closing date. From the interview I did w/Mario:

A: Is there any significance to what day you close? I remember you used to be open until October.
M: When my dad was still alive, we would go into October, always. He and my mother would go back and forth. She’d say it’s slow, there’s not enough business. My dad would say, well there’s still people that want lemonade and we’d go into October.

After my dad passed away, we stopped going into October. He died September 15th 1984 and that became the day. We always close on the first Sunday after the 15th of September.

Here's a link to my favorite thing I've ever written for LTH, and by the way, he died squeezing lemons:

Yesterday (Sunday) evening, peach was back. Honeydew was still available. Cantaloupe was particularly good with sweet, ripe chunks of melon evident. Only a few weeks left until the stand closes for the season in mid-September.

If so, I'm upset that I blew it...the first summer living here that I haven't made it over.
