A sport pepper is actually a sport pepper. It can sometimes be confused with a serrano pepper, and it’s very similar to what I would call a small serrano pepper, but the variety is actually called a “Mississippi sport pepper.” It is actually a thing. A small serrano pepper could be really close to it.

Now, where they’re grown is obviously Mississippi, [plus] Texas and Mexico. We buy the seed variety and then the growers plant it for us, and this is the best part: Vienna is the biggest buyer of Mississippi sport peppers in the world. We go through the most because of our hot dog. On a Chicago-style hot dog, the crown jewel is the sport pepper.

    Hi,

On another internet forum, someone asked how hot was a Chicago hot dog sport pepper? Obviously, I am not qualified to answer.

    Could someone please advise?

    Thanks!

    Regards,

IMO, a Chicago Sport Pepper is less about the heat, and more about the vinegary tang from its brine. There's some heat, but it doesn't even come close to say a jalapeno pepper, pickled or fresh.

Agreed. More zip than a pepperoncini, less than hot giardiniera. A good starter for an aspiring chile-head, it's where I got my start.

Since I anticipate some pushback on my unflattering opinion of Superdawg, I deduce the next exclamation will be, “OK, Pudgy, just whose hot dog do you consider to be better?” :x

Chicago hot dog stands better than Superdawg.

Anyhow, all of these places are better. You may be surprised that Al's Italian Beef on Taylor St. is on there. If you can pry yourself away from the italian beef, you would learn this. Maybe you should order both a beef and a hot dog. Since the italian lemonade stand across the street is closed for the next six months, spend what amount you would there on this.
Papa Chris' Place is just across the avenue from Une Année | Hubbard's Cave brewery if you do not want have BBQ from the latter.
Original Maxwell Street is at Cicero and Jackson Blvd. If you're on transit, you may want to limit your visits there to daylight hours.
I have a perception that the hot dog at Mr. D's Shish-Kabob would probably be on here also, but between the italian beef and the steak sandwich, I have not yet had it.

You've got some good stands in your post. Most of not all I believe serve the hot dogs with natural casing. Jimmy's & Gene and Jude's serve depression dogs; mustard, relish, onion peppers; Jeff's put just the right amount of sauerkraut. Years back I had the dog at Mr Di's; similar depression dog. Always trying other things at Papa Chris' so haven't sampled it. The Superdawg is a Vienna beef jumbo made just for them I think. Tasty but pricey. People go for the ambience more I'm pretty sure. And the 1/4 green tomato is an acquired taste.

I did enjoy Superdawg more in the Oscherwitz days. But I also miss the Best Kosher/Sinai dogs in general.
