I'm planning to ride my bike to Calumet Fisheries. I was looking through the posts to see if there was any info on tables or other places to eat other than your car, and was happy to see Rene G posted last year that they set up picnic tables. Does anyone know if these are still set up? Thank you.

Last I saw, they were there. However, we normally take the fish straight east to Calumet Park and eat on the lake. Just watch out for gulls.

As for the OFD/CF one-two punch, I can confirm it's a winner. Better yet, make it a triple and finish at Loncar's.

Ditto on Calumet Park. Nice spot to relax with your fishes (and, hopefully, donuts/fritters).

Yep, the benches were still outside of their shack looking over the river, as of when I went there earlier this summer. Usually I take my food to go home or to Calumet Park, though.

A month ago there were picnic tables with benches.

My friends and i like to bring our own table and chairs. We go closer to closing time and set up shop with a cooler full of beers and pops. Its fun to order a feast for everyone to share. The employees love to be done with the day and see us out there on 95th partying on the smoked shrimps until 12am. They always decline a free beer...
But for real, i will always love going here. One of my favorites. GOAT

I second Calumet Park, close enough trip so the breading isn't affected and a nice setting. Although I've had my fair share of eats while standing on the bridge.

Had Calumet Fisheries over the weekend and they were selling smoked Chubs - apparently for the first time in 5 years.

They were fantastic.

The smoked shrimp are awesome. I could've eaten pounds of them all by myself.

RE: Smoked Eel
As I was looking for smoked eel, I did call Calumet Fisheries and learned that they only make it during Christmas and New Years. A very short window and already too late on Jan 6.
However, I did call Hagen's (5635 W. Montrose Ave., 773-283-1944) (yes, will smoke eel to order, 1 ea min order, 2-3 days, weighs ¾ to 1 lb, he sells for 16.- a lb.
Just in case this is helpful to someone else who has a yen for smoked eel.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I sadly inform all our customers that our long time Store Manager Carlos Rosas passed away yesterday from the Covid 19 virus. Carlos was our ambassador he always had a smile on his face and would greet you warm hello. He was a big guy with a heart to match. I will miss him dearly as an employee and my friend. Please leave a message if you knew Carlos for his family to read. A big part of the spirit of Calumet Fisheries went to heaven yesterday.”

Carlos was indeed a cool guy.

When they were alerted to receiving the James Beard American Classic Award, he posted it on facebook. I immediately began propagating it on facebook and elsewhere.

Carlos immediately contacted asking to suck back all that information, because he learned the announcement had not yet been made to the world. I reversed course and pulled up all the markers.

For a while, Calumet Fisheries had a cousin in NJ doing their facebook postings. Any time I caught something odd, I would alert Carlos to do with it as he judged best.

Carlos most definitely was a loyal employee who treated everything as if he owned the place. He will be missed.

I learned about this from the FB post by a long time NWI friend—Carlos and his family lived next door to her elderly parents for many years and were caring, wonderful neighbors. The tragic ripple effect of this disease is truly awful.

About this time in 2019, LTHF member sweetwillie (who is not as active on here as elsewhere) propagated a "dinner" at Calumet Fisheries.
I think he managed to pick a day when Carlos Rosas was off. Here are a batch of the photographs I took, including an interior shot. It does not look like Carlos is in the shot.
Should I mention that Calumet Fisheries is one of the very few Chicago restaurants which COVID-19 has otherwise not disrupted?
