The Depot Nuevo has opened in Wilmette, a very nice addition to the downtown area that has been void of very good food( We do like the new " Gillson"s" too). In stark contrast to the " Old Ouillmette Depot" which was kinda like an upscale Denny's, Rob and Ann Garrisson have turned a 19th century train depot into a splashy fresh mixture of Latin American style fare. No, not traditional Latin food, but Latin style, not bad either. I have eaten there twice in the past week and attended their ribbon cutting ceremony this evening, and enjoyed their Guac., freshly made fried tortillas--you can really filll up on these, as well as a Mojito that was far better than what I've mangled at home( and after drinking all my mistakes I never seemed too or cared to get it right) I don't sell to them so this is a pretty unbiassed review. This is what is missing from the Wilmette restaraunt scene, now if we could get on or two more...? Oh, and they have great Margarritas too! This could be the new destination after beach volleyball this summer!

As a guy who liked The Noodle, it's good to hear that Nuevo Leon is finally open.

We're considering dinner there Saturday night. Anyone been there lately? Any advice on what to order/avoid?

They make a great Margarita, my favorite is the Escalade Margarita.

We start with whatever the special appetizer is that day. For the main I almost always get the tacos and your get a choice of three tacos. I usually order the duck, flank steak and barbecue short rib tacos. The green rice served with many of the items is pretty good and so is their Guacamole. I also find their green sauce addicting.

They recently closed in the front porch so now there is much more room, the inside space was pretty small before.

I agree with every part of that sentence.

You have obviously been to Deopt Nuevo a number of times, why don't you give us a little fill in on the Escalade Margarita and food. I'd love to know more than just that you agree.

I really wish I could elaborate, one main reason being that I agree with you that it would be more valuable than an "I agree" post. However, failing to be able to elaborate, I still thought it was worth seconding EvanstonFoodGuy's post, just to add critical mass to his opinion. (I.e., two people singing the praises of the Escalade Margarita might be even more persuasive than one.)

I've only been to Depot Nuevo twice, and the more recent of those times was when the weather was still warm enough to sit on the open porch. The margarita made a vivid impression on me for its freshness. If memory serves (and it might not, but I don't want to cheat and look at an online menu), one unusual ingredient was orange juice. Despite this departure from "classic," I remember thinking, "Now see, right there, that's what a margarita oughta taste like."

We ended up closer to home at Casa de Isaac, but looking forward to trying that margarita at some point.

I had dinner at Depot Nuevo in Wilmette last night. Other than a pretty decent batch of guacamole and fresh fried chips (which started to suffer from the high humidity by the end of the meal), most of the food was the typically overly sweet/under spiced version of suburban Mexican food geared toward the local populace. Having said that, I've got to recommend this place for any lover of tequila or mezcal. They have an impressive collection of both spirits and offer both flights and cocktails that are very well made. While I probably wouldn't return for the food, the drinks are worth checking out. Maybe couple a session at the bar with a trip to the poorly named, but much more "authentic" looking Trendy Taco a couple blocks up the street.

The village has announced that Depot Nuevo, the Mexican restaurant within the Depot Building at 1139 Wilmette Avenue, will be closing by the end of August. Scheduled to take over the space is Small Cheval, an offshoot of the fashionable Au Cheval in Chicago’s West Loop.
